Guess you're going there to view the Terracotta Army? Kinda awesome, to be looking at those life-sized relics. Those excavation sites and Qianling Tomb would take at least a day. Rest of the city (Bell Tower, City Wall, etc) could account for another day.

Would you be spending two days in Mount Huashan? Now THAT, would be real breath-taking.
Have a safe and fun trip!! Smile

xi'an is definitely one of the most exotic cities in China. As the only city with an intact city wall (beijiing used to have one but was pulled down by chairman mao's order), xi'an has gained its name hundreds of years ago as the start point of famous Silk Road.

The Terracotta Army is definitely not the only reason for you to go there. The muslim quarter near the Bell and Drum tower square is fantastic both in day and night time. I can never move my feet when i smell the smell of Kebab on the street.

Shann'xi History Musem is one of the best in China (much better than Shanghai Museum) and you can spend a whole day in it.

Near the South City Gate, there is a short street called De Fu Xiang, full of bars and coffee shops. For wild night life you can go to China Town, Ku LA LA or 1+1, three of the most famous night club in town.

The Forrest of Steles is also a must if you like China traditional cultures.

For dining, you can try Lao Sun Jia, the most famous lamb stew restaurant in China with more than 100 years history, but for most of foreigners, the smell of lamb soup and the pain staking process of breaking the bread by hand will be the main obstacle. You can also go to try the De Fa Chang, a very famous dumping restaurant in Xi'an.

Walking alone in back street after 10:00 pm is not adversed.

Accomodation: the Royal Hotel (Nikko hotel) in the downtown is the best either in location or price

I would recommend the visit of the Muslim quarter. You could also rent a bike on the city wall.
As for the history museum it's a very interesting one but is not as attractive as Shanghai's.
