Hi:
well, i guess it's not working posting in other people's topic seeking answers, so i made one myself. to those out there living comfortably as the temperature becomes milder when autumn approaches please help me:
am relocating from singapore to shanghai, purpose: study. 1sep04
1. looking for a place to stay/rent: fudan international hostel rates goes by per day USD 6 for a room with 2 people living in it. comes with heater, air-con, bathroom. I am looking to cut down on my expenses by living outside campus, somewhere near Fudan, Handan Road. Looking to bunk in with school mates, students, or couples, families. Living with couples: safe, know that i will my miss home, looking for family warmth, of course if there is someone who agrees to it, it means i will be disturbing into your privacy 
oh yuh, when i say cut down, i mean like monthly 400-600 dollars RMB, that is why i am looking for room mate or bunk in with existing people to share costs.
2. Photo Lab; looking for good photo labs, those providing Frontier technology or at least those that can do 35mm films scanning beautifully and at reasonable price per roll. FUJI photo labs preferred.
this also means i am also interested in photography and would like to meet people who take photographs frequently.
looking for place to buy filters(new or 2nd hand, mint most important)
looking for place selling 2nd hand russian cameras as well. FEDs, LOMOS, Zenit, KMZ...etc..
IS there a NIKON service centre or equilavant. my "most updated" Nikon booklet says only Beijing. 
3. people: interested to meet more people in the long run after settling down. yes. u guys know better. don't lie or hide that you are lonely -grin- be blunt about it. there's no shame to it. 
4. if budget permits:
a. people travel:
b: setting up nature aquarium.
c. if time permits: part-time work.
5. dentist: prior to coming, i got myself a nice toothache, yes. s h i t happens. looking for one that is near school, fudan, no need to travel far. should provide braces or fixing teeth solution. reason: wanting to continue with my braces making after stopping for 7 years, when i took out my retainers to eat big mac and nice old auntie threw it away with the junk food after i forgot to put it back.
6. read about sheesha someone wanna open a shop, If there is already an exisiting one, can anyone tell me about it. Where? Cost. etc. If anyone interested in a puff or so, do meet up
7. bug: someone i can bug to use his/her com to web building, time to time till i decide to get a com myself. been putting off making one due to work load here right now..
there's so many things in my mind now, and i cannot deem which is important anymore. this forum provides useful information though. keep up with it people. love the mild narrative yet informative answers, as well as provocative thought stimulating articles. seriousness kills.

hi miel,
i am from singapore too, and working as a commercial photographer here. only been here 2 months, so just my 2 cents worth.
1) Accomodation
i work out its about 1500RMB staying in your school base on a 30day month, depending on the condition of your room, i think its quite reasonable. if you want like 600/month, could be hard even if you bunk with people. an average 1 room flat, is about 900/mth (lowest i heard) with really really small room, 1 bed, and i am not sure if you have your own toilet. may be hard to find room to bunk! but then again, it also depends on your threshold for living standards, maybe i am just spoiled.
2) Photo Lab
there is a few near Jing An temple area that process films for professionals photographers, but i dunno how much they charge coz i went full digital. for second hand camera, you WILL want to go down to these place at Dalian Road, Xing Guang She Ying Shi Chang. which means starlight photography market, it is something like the peninsula plaza area back in singapore, but more more **** to look at, brand new or 2nd hand. but you cant find it in yellowpages or when you call to search for address...dun ask me why. i do not know of a Nikon service centre, but there are many at this place that does repairs.
3) People
well, i am a photographer, you found one. but could be very busy at times. but i understand how its like to be in a different place at times. we can meet sometime to bitch about PAP.
4)
a. people travel, i can count you in if i go with another singapore friend
b: setting up nature aquarium, never did b4.
c. if time permits: part-time work. i dunno if you can accept the rates the locals are getting...chances are you may prefer to just go take more photos.
5) dentist
never been to one here. but there are decent dentists here i believe
6) whats that?
7) com. cant help you on that.

thank rolento, i am still learning to use the camera just started. thanks for the info on where to buy stuff.
sheesha is an egyptian water pipe thingy that u inhale, basically smoke. comes in different flavours. it's hitting singapore , indonesia, malaysia hard as a new trend. pretty good to passs time ( or rather waste valuable time ) smoking and chatting over nothing. i will follow up with u once i get settled down and get familiarize with the map and shanghai. i gotta say thanks. -smiles- |
