| Post subject: Buying a Mac in SH???? |
Coming to SH soon. What is the advice; buying a Mac (Ibook) in SH or better do it in Europe? Any advice welcome.

hi jan . i suggest you buy it in europe..and check your guarantees etc. if you want to upgrade, do it there too... i've yet to see an apple centre here and whatever the case is, the people do not speak english so you may have difficulty whilst purchasing.. |

Though it is made in China, the price here is not the cheapest. Get all the upgrades fully loaded, and yes, check your warranty to make sure includes China. Software, however, you can probably get it for almost to nothing if you know the right channel. |

I have a G4:Dualprocessor, but I'm afraid to ship. I know from Apple there is a applecentre in SH. (I don't have the adres right here, sorry). But should't it be much cheaper in SH, as in Eu. those wondermachines are expensive |

yes...there's an Apple Expert Centre near People square. Have seen it last weekend. For the prices you can 'make' them a little more expensiver than the Apple Hongkong STore, but even less expensive than in germany for instance. Of course you have to deal with an english keyboard |

maybe we can buy them together to get some more cheaper price i'm a little bit undecided between an simple 12" ibook or the 12" PB, i travel a lot between office, app and meetings. So maybe a cheaper one is better and waiting until the G5 will come to the notebooks...
happy buying,

I'll stay for at least two years. I'mhoping to stay longer. by then the Ibook should be oldfashion. I could resell it as antique.
Now I'm going to sleep

There is a Apple Centre at the computer mall on Huaihai Road/Huangpinan Road, it's on the street level at the back of the building facing a park/Yanan Elevated Highway.
I've got my ibook at HK$ 10,300 in Hong Kong Feb this year. I think it's cheaper than Shanghai and if the margin is big enough, you can even consider taking a weekend trip there to buy it and have a holiday at the same time. |

I am coming to Shanghai as well this weekend. Just as a holiday though. I too plan to buy an ibook 12.1". I don't think customs should be a problem. As long as you travel with the laptop just in your hand luggage, there shouldn't be a problem. In England such a laptop costs between 700 and 800 GBP, and england always rips off it's customers, with everything, even their own products! So I hope it will be cheaper in Shanghai. What's the price I should count on? |

Thanks for that! I'm still thinking if I should get an ibook or a powerbook. I know there are some differences. My main concern is to be able to upgrade memory, as processors cannot be upgarded, and you have to open up the laptop to upgrade the dvd/cd-drive or the harddrive.
I don't think I can be bothered, especially if the ibook can be fitted with a superdrive.
What I do wonder, is do they give you a full software suite in Shanghai? A friend of mine bought his PB17" somewhere in asia, I think singapore or Thailand, and he got a whole host of software with it. I want to have Photoshop CS, as that is one of the main applications I use. If they don't, can I get cheap Apple software in Shanghai, or do I pay premium prices?
thanks guys! |

hi ksporry,
for longterm running better get an PB, cause its not possible to get an dvd/Cd upgrade for the ibook ( if yes its very expensive), so pay a little more at the beginning and have more fun. Even if you think you don't need Superdrive or bluetooth, get it. You don't know if you want to burn DVD's on the fly somewhere in China; if you than have it not installed, you will be getting angry about yourself.
For software you only get the systemssoftware and stuff like iphoto, itunes, idvd...but i think you can get software yery cheap in SHA or over other channels like... |

Hi,
I also want to buy a mac in shanghai, a pb 17;
Do you still want to buy it in group to get a discount ?
I am also wondering about going to HongKong to have my pb cheaper and to travel a little bit !
I have also discovered that on this website, it's possible to get a mac bought in Hongkong and shipped to Shanghai; http://dgclub.com/
Anyone have tried ? |

yes, I don't know if we can get a lot of discount by buying two powerbook.
Anyway, I have decided to go to HongKong to buy it, it's cheaper, and I want to visit HongKong also.
It's true that the iMac G5 is attractive.. but not portable... |
