First things first, niko: where did you get the DVD??? Urgent!
Didn't realize Rohmer ever made a movie NOT about bourgeoisie and faux-intellectuals.
I got Rohmer's "Pauline on the Beach" recently. |
haha, seeking a lovely dvd is an enjoyment,i just saw it last Saturday in a small dvd shop near my home, then i bought it.it's his newest movie.but i havent found his "Pauline on the Beach" . |

[quote="serendSounds like one of the hot subjects for European film-makers in 1970s. You have the Hungarian "Red and White", and Volker Schlöndorff's "Der Fangschuß". They are all about post-October-Revolution Russia, the struggles between the White and the Red. Schlöndorff's is particularly poignant: love, and sexuality itself, thrown into turmoil by the Revolution; the changing lnadscape of lust, romance, disappointment and betrayal. The film is better known by its French title, "Coup de Grace".
I feel sorry for you, niko, to sit through another film by Dumont . How was it?[/quote]
i'm reviewing Schlöndorff's "Der Fangschuß" and reading a book on an interview with Schlöndorff and Gunter Grass. sighs, trying to know the war better.
dont cry, boy, after seeing "29 palms" by Dumont,i hate him more. a morbid story,he kept his style in the film, long shots, silence, bed scenes...i especially hate the actor.disgusting... |

Niko I am not totally confused: when you said you were "reviewing" the film, I assumed you were writing a review for some magazine or other.
And what DVD shops are we talking about here? |

Thanks for the clrfication. Still need a cross street, though. I don't think the current info will be sufficient for the cab driver. Or do you have the shop's tel #?
Wujiaochang is OK. Not very convenient, though. And you were right; it feels like a large construction site. I wonder what's the most beautiful university campus in SH. So far I saw none as pleasant as Xiamen University's. |

I saw that film a few months ago and liked it. Not as good as "Beijing Bicycle", but defintely worth seeing. I suspect a lot of non-professional actors were used, which added to the authenticity, yet the tempo in front of the camera suffered a bit, too. I really like the way the film ended. One of the most moving and subtle portrayal of despair. One may even go beyond their countryside trapping and see something more universal in that despair, an existential despair about the impossibility of finding one's place in the world.
Your reference to Cai Ming-liang is interesting. Cai, however, expects more tolerance from his audience for drabness and plain ugliness. One may even say Cai is sadistic in a visual way. Li Kang-sheng went one step further. Wang, in comparison, is a lot more aware of the beauties around him, even in utter squalor (see "So Close to Paradise"). This may have to do with the influence of Italian Neo-Realists on Wang's generation, de Sica, Rosselini, etc..
That's probably why, when Cai's films fail, they look disgusting. When Wang's do not live up to our expectation, however, there are always moments to cherish.
BTW: niko, there seems to be a lot of film books in Chinese all of a sudden. I saw many in Ji-Feng Bookstore, at Shaanxi S. Rd. stop of Metro Line#1. I just thought a movie buff like you may be interested. |

I saw "Coffee and Cigarrettes". Thoroughly enjoyed it. I particularly like the episode with cousins played by Cate Blanchett, and the one with two old gay men hearing Mahler in their minds, and the one with two actors who are distant cousins. Other episodes are less good. But I still get a lot of laughs out of even those. Never is awkward silence so funny! At times I laughed before I was even aware why.
Shot in glorious black and white. Niko: I am really surprised that you don't like black&white. You must be the only film buff I know who's NOT attracted by B&W. Have you seen "Third Man"? Or "Citizen Kane"? Or "Asphalt Jungle"? Or "Raging Bull"? I am worried... |

i'm curious about which area is in Wang's "drifters" ,a peaceful town, sounds like a dialect in Zhejiang province or Fujian province.why i'm interested in it,bcs in Jia zhangke's movie, they speak Shanxinese,it's his familiar enviorment, his language, his growth enviorment.so his movies have a strong personal style.but Wang,as i know,he was born in shanghai.i cant read shanghai from his movie.i dont mean it's bad, just my feeling, sometimes i'm sensitive to some details in movies.
thanks, serend,i like Ji-feng,i have an art movie handbook(bought it from internet),in the book, over 400 DVDs the writer recommend, but half of them(at least) cant be found here.hehe. |

sometimes my interest in choosing dvds is fluid.in some term,i specially focus on certain style movies.mmm...so,my interest to B&W movies is changeable. i've seen "Third Man" and "Citizen Kane"...lately i found a B&W dvd of Wim wenders, its name is "Der Stand Der Dinge". |

^ Yes, I found "Der Stand", too.
Another great B&W to recommend: Charles Laughton's "Night of the Hunter". Beautiful as a sophistigated fairy-tale... you'll know what I mean when you see it.
I picked up the Southern Zhejinag dialect from some fragments of conversation but I don't remember where. Also from the scenery. I visited Fujian a few times in the past months. |

I saw "It's a Wonderful Life" in a boxset, with some dozen other Oscar winners of the 40s and 50s. If you wish to make the commitment to oldies, you may get them at Pudong South Rd./ ZhangYang Rd.. There's a row of DVD shops, and go for the one towards the end away from ZhangYang Rd.
No, I haven't seen the movie as a single. |

I saw only his "Discreet Pleasure of Bourgeoisie", twice. Found it mildly entertaining. Didn't really get into it.
But the funny thing is that this almost works by telepathy: I bought 2 DVDs by Brunuel just this evening, when I came to Pu-xi for some Japanese food materials. It seems that I happened to be interested in learning more about Brunuel, too, at the same time as you did! Isn't that a nice coincidence or what!
BTW: it's entirely possible that I may never really get "into" Brunuel. For instance, I always hate Godard. I tried and tried and tried... |

Don't get me started on "Salo"... After watching 20 mins of it, I took it out of my DVD player and gave the disc to abstreet vendor, not only for free, but actually with a 5-kuai tip to make up for his pains in selling it.
In fact, Dumont is something like a less disturbing contemporary pupil of Pasolini, isn't he?
Recently, German stage has been suffering from the same passion for the fringe. One Catallan crook staged Mozart's "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" as a freak show, complete with "live" rape and disembowelling and other mutilations.
If this is the future...... |
