woody allen is one of my my favorite directors,in his movies, there is an obvious contrast between reality and dream, sometimes,it helps me to see the world more clearly.haha."I admire Allen's respect and sympathy for urban, career women",dont tell me you have bias on career women?lol

there is another special american director:Robert altman,i saw his "3 women" months ago,a mysterious picture(just like a totem) appears repeatingly in the movie, impressed me deeply
Guy ritchie pays more attention in the form of movie than Quentin tarantino does.it's not strange,he was a director of Ad. and MTV.so i think he knows how to catch audience's eyes, especially young people.they like flaring stuffs.right?

Have you seen "The Player" by Altman?
I am not sure if I would rate "3 Women" among Altman's finer films. One of the more agenda-driven films by Altman, which he make at regular intervals, between really fine productions such as "Shortcuts" and "Gosford Park". And I am sorry that I am still not a convert to the charm of Mr. Ritchie. You were quite right in pointing out the flashy camerawork and MTV editing in his movies, but give me "Taste of Cherry" any day. I walk out of a Ritchie film and I don't have anything left. Doesn't enrich my mind one little bit. Who would have imagined that British in the 90s and 21st Century would be reduced to such shallowness, incapable of anything better than Andrew LLoyd Weber, Cameron, and Ritchie?
And Ridley Scott. I saw "Matchstick Man" a few days ago. Supposed to be a finer film by Scott. Duh......
Also saw " Der Name der Rose". Not very faithful to Umberto Eco's obsession with cult-like obsession with "numerical mysticism", but the Medieval atmosphere is really well-done. If Christian Slater had just found strength to close his jaw for a few seconds, my experience would have been very satisfying, indeed. But nothing is perfect. The Commentary soundtrack by the director is quite quicky and interesting, too.
Do you use that "commentary" feature often? The commentary on "SEven Samurai" is the best I have heard so far. Criterion Collection usually does a great job in offering juicy extras like this. If you find ANY DVD9 issue of any Criterion Collection title, I would suggest that you go for it. In US, they remain the most expensive and most respected DVD issues. |

no,i havent seen "the player" by altman, how to rate the director's style?mysticism?
i know the book(the name of rose).but havent seen the film.few of Umberto Eco's books can be found in shanghai.i liked the films of Medieval theme, but after seeing some,i think the historical atmosphere and scenes make, have already covered up the film itself, that's a big problem of many historical films.some dicretors are trying to show the grand and expensive atmosphere or dresses with ignoring the content.
i dont use the "commentary" often, usually i buy D5,so the make is not always very good.ya,the quality of criterion collection is better.and others like MK2,camel...are also nice.
you want "taste of cherry"?maybe my version(from Joyo, usually, dvdshas only chinese subtitle,i'm not sure, will tell u after i check it.2 Iran movies to recommend to u "hidden half","the day i became a woman" |

It's very hard to characterize Altman. His style seems to be evloving all the time. One of the reasons he's so great. But his influence is felt all the time. A notable example is "Magnolia" by P.T. Anderson. Compare it to "Shortcuts" and you will see what I mean.
I also discovered Mizoguchi's full set (published by France) recently. I watched "Ugetsu" and really enjoyed it. It's what I call an "epic for little men". And it avoids excessive sentimentalism, the common weakness of this genre. Funny that most of the great Japanese film directors have a soft spot for women, from Ozu to Naruse to Mizoguchi to Itami Juzo. A Ph.D thesis can vbe written studying the psychology of this, in a male-dominant society. |

"Funny that most of the great Japanese film directors have a soft spot for women"....how about Shohei imamura?did u his "eel" and "Ballad of Narayama"?in his movies, female usually are much stronger than male,it's not out of his sympathize for women,on the contrary,it's out of admire and respect.especially,in "Ballad of Narayama",he showed a female-dominant(i think so) society.
his style is quite different from Takeshi kitano's
and i find that few japanese directors like epic movie(except Akira kurosawa,i like his "shadow warrior" very good)most of japanese movies are about common life and feelings.maybe it has something to do with its national character. |

Yes, Immamura is one of my favorite Japanese directors. I really liked "Unagi" and "Warm water under the Red Bridge". I believe another movie I liked is also by him but I am not sure: the Diary of Doctor Sth. I'll have to check. It's about a Japanese doctor who set his mind on curing his town of hepatitis, even though life was crumbling around him in late-WWII Japan. I also bought his "Japanese Insects" recently but haven't got around to watch it yet. No, I haven't even heard of "Ballad of Narayama". But I'll take your words for it.

The Japanese minimalism: here is one thing that I like about Japanese. Somehow I always feel that Japanese literature and films are a lot more elegant in a tastefully simple way, than most of its Chinese counterparts. |

"Ballad of Narayama" another name is 楢山节考(both is chinese and japanese name)
i agree with your views about japanese literature, more actual, elegant, they pay more attention to life, personal life, seldom to nation, even the world.but from the life,we can find out the national(or late-WWII influence).by the way,i wrote a thesis on it:)
chinese writers like to talk about the society and world, sometimes they feel like saviors,i dont think art can change the world.
many people think chinese and japanese are similar(both are oriental),acturally,on the contrary, the essence of culture is totally different. |
