Post subject: Flash Cards

My family and I are moving to Shanghai in December for a three year assignment.......I have read on several posts - both here and at other Shanghai expat sites - about the usefulness of having some sort of "flash cards" that are used to communicate with taxi drivers, etc. Does anyone sell these, or are they always homemade?

People do sell them; I can't recall the organizations that do (I bought some when I arrived ... still useful for when people come to visit and I can't escort them). You may wish to contact the consulate, business chamber or some of the women's organizations (many times the proceeds go to charity) to see where you can find some (unless you are lucky enough to find someone on this site that does it).

You can also make your own by collecting the business cards of places that you like and storing them in a small flip card case. I have one of these also and it was especially useful while learning my way around town.
