| Post subject: kindergarten teachers |
Please help, i am trying to teach kindergarten children, but having great difficulty doing so, i am not a fully trained teacher and do not try to pass my self as one, i have great respect for people teaching children, they are, in my view tallented, and very patient and with a good degree of kindness.
My problem, how do you go about teaching these little angels, i have already said to the company i work for, that kindergarten is not a good idea for me, but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears, so could somebody please tell me how to go about this, what do i need to do, sing, play games, talking is no good because they don't understand, can anyone give me notes on lesson planning, HELP.
I believe that if children should be taught, then it should be properly done, and i do not have a sense of satisfaction, of doing a good job.
Who is kind enough to give me a few tips and a little advice. |

I suggest goto a few websites on the internet and get some idea's for games and lesson plans for children. There is a lot on the net these days to help people like your self. As for schools, well as long as they have someone that is white and speaks Native English that is all that matters to them, the reason is they make good money from student fee's, most places I have been to do give a **** about the students.
Also, you could do an online course to get a certification, like TEFL, there is a website called I-To-I which allows you to do an online course.
Remember this though, even teachers and trainers with certifications don't always make good teachers. I am a trainer for Microsoft and we have seen many people get there training exams but not all of them still make good trainers, some of the best teachers don't have any certifications.
Try your best, but remember to look up on the net and get some ideas. |

first and foremost, you need to have love for children, patience, and passion in teaching them - if you have those, then you've won half the battle. these things, you dont learn from school or from the books. its innate... and thats what most of the "happy & fulfilled" kindergarten teachers have.
next, you have to prepare. other people think that teaching kindergarten is easy, bec all you do is teach them ABC. no, it entails learning and understanding how children learn and knowing what "works for them".
i suggest you do the ff:
1. surf the internet or buy early childhood education books. you can try these websites as a starter: www.preschoolrainbow.org and www.scholastic.com
- know the developmental characteristics of the age group that you are handling. is it the 2yr olds? the 3's, 4's,5's? children from different age groups are very different, so you have to know the chars. of your age group so you can better plan for activities for them and set goals for them too. know about their cognitive skills/intellectual ability, physical skills (gross & fine motor) and their socio-emotional skills. it's not as complicated as it may seem - basically its just getting to know if kids in your class can actually be expected to use scissors or to write or to say "sorry" or to learn the ABC, etc...
- look for interesting activities for children. remember that learnign should be fun for them. so look for songs, games, arts & crafts, stories, etc... that kids would love to do. these should all be related to what theme you have in class or whats stated in your curriculum. ex: topic on animals - then you research for songs, arts, etc... for this topic.
2. listen to childrens songs - learn them and think of simple actions or movements for the song. kids love doing action songs, and its the best way to make them remember the song.
3. observe how other teachers handle their classes, so you can get tips from them.
i hope this helps. get to know the kids in your class - and slowly, you'll figure out what works for them and what doesnt... everyday is a learning experience. the important thing is, you have to love what you are doing, and you have to enjoy it. remember that children pick up the emotions and energy that they get from their teachers.
by the way, belated happy teacher's day! it was "our day" yesterday, 9/10/04. |
