Hi everyone,

The meeting went on well! We went to L16 n Sasha's, enjoyin beer outside (coffee n tea for girls). As usual, the next coffee meeting will be held in two weeks, which is on Nov 13, SAT. Any ideas/suggestions for the location are greatly appreciated.

Juniperberry has informed us that she'd like to go to suzhou this weekend, and so do i n my gf! Maybe we can have a mini expat coffee meeting in suzhou! Razz Hehe, we're expanding very rapidly eh? For those interested, either post or email me or laurent, who'll be our host AND tour guide of Suzhou. Smile

Cheers

mentos,
you're putting damn too much pressure on me, dude !
I am no prussian general skilled organizer, so I bet you'll have to bear with it.
Still, I have some room in my appartment, that for once in 6 months could be useful. Let's use it ! (I think I can host about 4 ppl "comfortably" (that is, with a bed), but more if not afraid of sleeping rough (or simply not sleeping at all...)

People interested, PM or email me. Any ideas, wishes and so on are welcome (that gives me less work ;o)

For once, let's have a zapata's free weekend ;oP

Bamse n guys,

I'm almost certain that i'll be goin to suzhou this weekend with my gf, so is juniperberry i think. Thanks Bamse for the warm welcome, we appreciate u letting us stay in ur place. Razz As for cheeky, email bamse or me after u've decided ur weekend plan.

Btw, even though still early, i'm suggesting the meeting on the 13th to be held in a hot pot place (huo guo), possibly "Xiao Fei Yang". The reason is because it is inexpensive, tasty, and more importantly for SARUMAN, it has cheap beers! One free beer/drink for each person. 30rmb spending avg.

As for BAMSE, maybe u can do us a favor by postin some info abt suzhou, such as the must see/go places n nice bars, restaurants, etc. thanks!

Cheers

well, that won't be an easy task !
places to see most probably include all those gardens, though visiting 2 or 3 of them should be enough for most of people from my experience Surprised) I don't remember the ones that are usually recommended as the nicest ones, but I guess I could figure it out from my travel book.
The Tiger hill (虎丘山) is a quite nice (though human-made) scenic hill, that is worth a walk around.
The south west area of the city, around Pan men (盘门), is also quite nice, could be a tea-house stop as well Surprised)
There are a couple of temples (of which I have missed a bunch...still time to repair this mistake) and towers.
If you like museums, I've heard that the silk museum is really worth it (haven't found anyone strong-willed enough yet to come with me...).

well, guess we might skip the museum after so much scenic trails (laugh) but how many are going for this ?

Do we have a head count and where are we meeting up ?

there are also a bunch of traditionnal (old) streets and houses in the old part of the city. Quite nice to take a walk around there.
And obviously, Suzhou girls are (supposed ?) to be the cutest over the country.

As for night life, go to shi quan street (十全街), that's where everything happens. (you can also turn it this way: aside from there, nothing happens ;o)
In about 80% of the bars, you will find "special services" (especially if you look laowai).
There are a few places where you can shake your body on whatever boomboom rythm.
A big plus of Suzhou is that you don't need a taxi to get from one bar to another Surprised) It makes for cheap parties.

As for food, there's also XiaoFeiYang here Surprised)
The most reknowned place is most probably a Sichuan restaurant... (chuan fu lou)
But there are a bunch of cheap places all around, and I'm not too worried about that.

And worst case, if you get bored, you can still get in one hour to Shanghai, and have fun there ;op

Bamse, thanks for info on Suzhou! It's definitely helpful. Btw, how far is ur home from the train station? How abt from ur home n train station to the commercials areas (shopping streets)? Maybe u could email us ur add. in case of emergency.

Juniperberry is suggesting that she leaves for suzhou at around 9 am on SAT and come back to SH with the 11 am train on SUN. I think it's a good proposal n i think my plan would be similar to hers. How abt Richard, Markus, n cheeky?

Well well.. I myself have already been to Suzhou on a tourist trip and seen most of the touristworthy places. I think the MUSTS in Suzhou are..

1. The Garden of the Master of the Nets
- smaller garden with beautiful arrangement and an art gallery that goes far beyond the usual crap you can buy from painters at tourist attractions
- maybe one bigger garden as well, there are dozens spread over the city

2. A ride with a small boat through the small channels into the old town
- here, the people live on the water like 100 years ago, it is really beautiful (not the Canale Grande though, thats just a big industrial channel), you can take a water taxi for really cheap money and get out at the old market place and take a look at the market

3. The Silk Museum
- Yes, it is really worth a visit, Bamse!! It is not like a traditional museum for it is an actual production plant for silk. It is really fascinating to see how much silk they get from one small cocoon. Also, you can buy really cheap silk stuff here (for example a 2*2m quilt made from pure silk for only RMB 450,-)

I think the temples are just the same as everywhere else, you've seen one, you've seen 'em all

I will meet at the train station at 18:00 on Saturday with my girl and we will take the train. I suggest we all either meet at Bamses place or directly at the restaurant around 20:00 and then directly jump into the party zone of Suzhou!! My girl and me will probably stay at a hotel, so theres no need to plan us in, Bamse, unless you have a really confortable double bed (-;

Due to the sudden change of plans, I was unable to go to suzhou this weekend. Hope u guys enjoyed the trip! Wink

For next week's coffee meeting, it will be held in Pink8 restaurant/bar. It is definitely good value because 35rmb gets u a main course (varies depending on the day) and a choice of either soup, soft drink, coffee, tea, or a small bottle of Budweiser. Furthermore, it includes for dinner n weekends. Plus, the food is definitely great for the price! The soup is REAL soup, not those cheap egg n tomato types n the sandwiches n pizzas r pretty authentic. Last but not least, there's a free pool table for us to use. If ur chinese is good enough, check out the site at www.pink8.com .

For a change, I suggest the next coffee meeting to be held on FRIDAY night instead of SAT afternoon. What do you guys think? In that way, people who wanna go clubbin or somewhere else can go after the meeting.

Friday, NOV 12, 8:30 PM at pink8 bar : www.pink8.com

This time, PM me instead of emailing me.

Cheers
