Post subject: iPod problems - for gods sake can you help?

Ok, thanks to Soulseek I now have a helluva lot of songs on the iPod, as such I try and keep it organised as much as possible. Yet I keep getting double entries of artists showing on the iPod. I have checked for mispelt names etc, but to no avail - eg - I have two Led Zeps, when I check the albums/songs they are the same on each entry, but there should only be one Led Zep and then the albums/tracks, it should not be there twice.

Also I have started getting exclamation marks showing next to certain songs in itunes. Luckily the songs have not disappeared from the iPod, but I cannot play the songs from itunes on my laptop. Does anyone know what thats all about?

I know I don't have major problems as such, but my finger is getting tired spinning my way down from A - Z, and the less duplicate artists names I have the quicker I can listen to my favourite Zucchero song.

The exclamation marks on your laptop mean that the song is not on it's original location any longer ( from where you uploaded it once onto your ipod via i tunes ) and that's why they probably appear twice on your ipod...

it's a hell lot of work but i organise my songs on the laptop in folders , each artist/album one folder and avoid double entries like that....

1. With the names it is likely that they appear to be the same but they aren't. My guess is that if you go into iTunes and actually click on the names you will find that there are extra spaces behing one of the names. iTunes recognises these spaces as characters and sees them as two different names.

Remember you actually have to click on the name as if you were typing in or renaming it to see the extra spaces.

2. The exclamation points mean that iTunes has lost the reference to this song name. Most likely you changed the name of the song....not in iTunes...but where you have the actual song stored on your PC. This means you changed the name of the actual song file where it is stored on the PC. Or if you didn't change the name you may have changed the location.

All you have to do it find the name of the song file where you have it stored on you PC and double click it to get it to play. Then it will come up in iTunes. The old file (exclamation point file) will still appear but you can now delete it as it is a lost link or dead reference.

Hope it helps.

driz, do you have all the songs which are on your ipod *also* on your computer? if not, i reccomend first making a copy of everything on your ipod to somewhere on your computer, *just* in case you have any problems....

Drizzle, do you 'consolidate' your library?? If not, that might explain the ! signs. If you consolidate then, then the songs are copied in the Itunes folder instead of spread around on your pc. It really helps to avoid those !'s.

Update -
Ok - I have spent virtually all day trying to organise the folders. I have put all the songs/albums in individual folders a'la Fiddlers advice [this I could do through itunes] BUT I still have a number of artists listed twice on the pod [NOT on itunes]. I have lost music too, but its no problem as they are cd's I have anyway. I have also changed the id3tags on the tracks which belong to the individual artists so they are all the same format and checked for duplicates/spelling mistakes etc..nothing changes - I still get duplicates. It is infuriating me - does anyone have any further advice?
Filip - what does consolidating do?

Consolidating puts everything neatly into folders separated by artists and grouped by albums. It's magic actually.
So, if I had your iPod for example and connected it to my notebook I could copy all your music in the way it is organized in your iPod hard disk (folders called F0, F1, F2, F3, a mess!) and then it would copy all of it neatly into folders.

Try it.

Also, have you checked www.ipodlounge.com's FAQs?

^ I know....I spent days attempting to insert a CD into it....women...

Anyway, I don't know what the hells going on anymore. I have done all the above. I shall just have to learn to live with it. HC - I cannot access the ipodlunge forums, I get the home page, and when I try to view anything else I get told to sod off. [ie - this page cannot be displayed]..

I am a new Ipod user, and Drizzle explains my frustrations EXACTLY!! I COULD have written it !! (did not think to come here),, Yes I am a woman but do not think I am THAT dumb!! I have all of my songs in folder a-z on my PC and when I put them in Itunes, then on to my Ipod, some of them suddenly get the exclamation point too !!! I have no idea why?? IT is not like I have renamed a song or MOVED it. Also the Ipodloungelcom site NEVER loads !! Would be nice if it did ,, but I have YET to get it to load. Oh well will muddle thru on my 'womanly ways of technology".
Thanks !!!!
