It's a bit hard to describe how to do this without a picture and/or live demo, but here are a couple of tips on how to spot a fake bill (currency).

I've been told that for the new (issued in 2005) 100 RMB bills, the "best" way is to rub your finger along the far right side (where there are a bunch of short horizontal lines) and make sure the surface is rough/ribbed. Note that the pre-2005 versions don't have this feature though. The 2005 100 RMB bills have several new added security features.

For both old and new versions of the bills, you should also hold the bill up to the light and look for a clear watermark image of Mao on the left side. The lines on the right side of Mao's collar and hair are also slightly "raised/ribbed" but with older bills, they tend to get worn down and hard to feel.

I have learned these tips the hard way - having unknowingly accepted (or my staff accepted?) fake bills from customers in my business. I have since gone out and bought a fake money detector machine for the business!

There are a few other ways too, but I'm to tired to try to figure out how to describe them in words (looking at the color-changing "100" in the lower left corner - very hard to see sometimes, I think; looking for the tiny "100 RMB"'s printed on the thin stripe, etc.). Maybe someone else can take a stab at it?

rub it against a white wall, if any red comes off it's fake. Also, if you snap the bill, it should have a sharp, plastic sound to it, fake ones are just like snapping paper, try it and you'll easily hear the difference.

Amazing how people end up with fake 100rmb banknotes. I hear stupid foreigners complaining about it all the time. How and why do you get those? Basically they only place you can get them is at the bank - and those are not fake! Its the largest denomination in China, so no way to you get change with 100rmb bills. Or do some of you get paid cash?! Ah ah. Repeat after me: "English teachers".

In local Chinese restaurant sometimes it will give packs of wet tissue to every customers. This costs, say, RMB1, per pack. So if one don't need them may just return them to the waiter/waitress and they won't charge you in the bill. Of course this is small money but just it doesn't make sense to pay for something you don't need/use. Also for environment protection.

Move to a crummy neighborhood in Puxi your first year, then move to an expat neighborhood in PuDong the second year.

After learning to cope with life in China in a chaotic neighborhood with no expats, then you will be spoiled rotten once you move to a fancy neighborhood in the relative calm of PuDong.

How do you spot a fake fa piao?

to spot a fake fa piao: put your thumb on the image which is a square, for a few seconds. The image should change colour from the heat of your thumb. If it doesn't change, it's probably fake.

another thing which I encoutered: please get your temporary residence slip by registering at the nearest PSB when you arrive in Shanghai (i.e. within 48 hours). Also if you are on a L visa (long term stay), whenever you leave China and return to in this case to Shanghai, please register with the PSB and get a new slip. I'm not familiar with the other types of visasthough, just my personal encounter with the PSB recently.

Here are some tips:

- you can buy a pre-paid SIM card for your cell phone at any tobacco stand (used to be you could get them at convenience stores but this is dwindling). If you can't speak Chinese, point to your cellphone and say "kahhhh". Costs are different depending on what phone numbers you get (the less popular ones are cheaper!). You can buy top-up cards at the same types of places. You'll be given a voucher or a scratch-off card; call the number on the back and go through the prompts. If you look lost the vendor will take pity on you and phone in the top-up for you (I have done all this through sign language, so it can be done!)

- If you are in a hurry to get to the Pudong airport, there is a Maglev high speed train that will get you there in about 7 minutes. If you can produce a plane ticket the price if RMB 40 for day of travel (otherwise RMB 50)

- If you need to go to the bank try to avoid the last week of the month (after payday!). Also avoid lunch times if possible

- Everything's negotiable

- It's OK to use the PRC national lane at the Pudong airport immigration if the foreign passport line is really long and the PRC line is short (I asked)

- There are shops at the electronics mall near Hongkong Plaza that sell ultraviolet pens that you can shine at RMB and USD bills to see if they are fake

- You can use your ATM card as a debit card at stores and restaurants (was here MONTHS before I figured that one out)

If you're on a bike, have green light to go straight ahead, taxis turning right should wait but try to force you to stop for them: use your flat hand and bang on the top of the taxi. Great way to stop them, as only foreigners do this and the last thing they want is to hit a foreigner. Rude but effective, in a city where taxi drivers disrespect cyclists, counter measures are allowed. Action above is NOT recommended for policecars

oniclar

Yes you are correct about enhanced chances of death through abuse but If somebody wants to drink, smoke, it is there choice as long as they do it in a civiised way.

If you want to preach this then join the green party and go to the UK they would love you on there side.

This is not meant as an insult just to emphasise the freedom of choice?
