Do switch your China Mobile Phone plan to "Da Zhong Ka" (大众卡). Can save you some bucks. The basic plan is RMB16/month for unlimited incoming calls in Shanghai. Out going phone calls cost you RMB0.13/minute.

another thing which I encoutered: please get your temporary residence slip by registering at the nearest PSB when you arrive in Shanghai (i.e. within 48 hours). Also if you are on a L visa (long term stay), whenever you leave China and return to in this case to Shanghai, please register with the PSB and get a new slip. I'm not familiar with the other types of visasthough, just my personal encounter with the PSB recently.

Is this the yellow slip? And what is PSB? What are the consequences if we don't get it done? Will we not be allowed to leave the country?

I am currently using this for my prepaid card. I just wonder how am I being charged the 16rmb? Is it through my top-up card? What if I leave my value to be zero for a long period of time? Will my line cut off?

Hello there!

I'm heading to China in October. I'm being sent for work first to Korea and then to China on October 19th. At first it'll be work for about a week BUT I have requested time off so I can stay and explore a little bit more.

I'm a Peruvian living in San Francisco, California, for more than 15 years...

Since the company won't pay for my time off, I need to find affordable acommodations... do you have any suggestions?

Anything that you might recommend to a new arrival? First time in China!!

Cheers!!

Marco

Hey Marco,

If you are arranging to visit China for one week, you can talk to a travel agent. They will arrange an affordable and comfortable accommodation for you. And they will help you explore SH during your stay.

Have a nice holiday.

Somebody told me that in the electronics warehouses (like the one in Huai Hai Rd by Hong Kong plaza) one can ask the seller to sell it to you without the VAT. They can do this as long as you are willing to walk away with no fa piao. Not a good thing to do if buying brand goods, but if one is staying in Sh short term, and buys Chinese brands with no international guarantee anyway, it could be a good way of saving a few bucks...

Reply to this text with a 'C' and you get the address in Chinese.

I used it once, but unfortunately, I hadn't received the answer yet. Is there any problem with my cellphone? Anyway, I'm not accustomed to use text msg.

Hi,
I'll be moving to shanghai in 2 weeks' time, really appreciate if you could advice and provide reliable contacts for the following:

- would it be more cost effective if I get a realtor there or online? If latter, can you provide the link or your connections?

- my new office will be at lujiajiu CBD, which apartment would you suggest?

- would you recommend I take the subway/MRT or hire a part time river?

- if MRT, what's your experience?

- if driver, what would be the cost(to and fro btw apartment and office only) and any recommendation?

Thx all!!!

Whether you get a realtor online or when you arrive in Shanghai, you should get more than one - and let each one know that you have other realtors working for you. That would be your best bet for getting them to show you the good places and to get you the better deals. If your accommodation is provided/paid for by the company, try to get them to commission the realtor - the company is likely to have moe bargaining power since they can give the realtor repeat business.

Which apartment you choose depends on (1) your lifestyle and (2) your budget. There are apartments in Lujiazui but these tend to be high end to very high end. For example, some furnished 2BRs in Lujiazui can go for up to USD3,000/month. Also, Lujiazui, being on the Pudong side, is further away from where the nightlight and shopping are. So, you need to work out your budget and priorities before you decide where to live. If you choose the Puxi side, try to get somewhere on the Metro (subway) lines (Line 2 runs through Lujiazui but you can connect from any of the other lines). Word of caution: the Metro is jammed packed at peak hours but it means you always have an alternative even if you use another regular mode of transport.

It is possible to get a car and driver for just to and from work - cost will depend on, among other things, distance and the time needed to get to work.

Welcome to Shanghai!

a) Cabs; there is a minimum charge of 11 kuai then you pay to the kilometer but it is always pretty cheap. Keep the ticket for 2 reasons; first if your company reimburses your expenses you will need it. Second, if you forget or loose something in the taxi, you can get in contact with him through the company

b) If you don’t know what to do, you can always check magazines like “that’s Shanghai ” and city “week end”, you can get them for free in places like “Starbuck Coffee”. They have plenty of address including the bars, clubs but also cultural event and so on

c) Stay calm in all situations, getting angry with people will make them lose their face and thus worsen the problem. But remember that a smile can mean happiness but it can also hide embarrassment.

d) Always arrive on time as it is something very important in china. So you’d better arrive earlier than too late.

e) Don’t give any tips in , it is not in the culture so be happy the restaurant will only cost you what is says on the menu.

f) International driving license are not accepted so you will have to get a Chinese one. If you’re Belgian then you’re lucky. Indeed, is the only country that has agreement with china so we just need to translate our current driving license, get a medical check up and get the license. If you come from anywhere else then you’ll have to pass the tests.

g) Always carry cash with you, it is the most common way of paying and many shop don’t even accept credit card. Also, try to have small notes as not everyone will be able to give you the change on 100 kuai

h) Be careful when buying cigarettes on the street as they are often poor imitation of the international as well as local brands

This might help. I might have some more on my blog so check it out: http://gregashanghai.over-blog.com

1. Do not drink tap water.
2. Local Pepsi in cans tastes better than the one in bottles for some reason.
3. Always bring some tissues and toilet paper with you. Some of the public restrooms may not have the TP refilled throughout the day.
4. The best public restrooms (clean, and they don't care if you use it even if you are not customer) are at KFC and McDonald.
5. Metro (subway) is often faster than car.
6. If the weather is bad, it is almost impossible to get a taxi during traffic hours.
7. For the bird eye's view of Shanghai, Jian Mao tower is cheaper, less crowded, easier to walk around than Oriental Pearl tower, and it has a star-ware like inner core.
8. If you are from US and uses Cingular or T-Mobile, unlock your phone before you come here. You can use the phone with a local GSM cell phone number.

Can you advise how to do this?

Also, is it possible to call a taxi company and arrange with them for someone to take you to/from work everyday?

As far as prices, I do remember seeing, on this webpage, a forum on prices of things. Maybe it was just Fake Market prices, but I suppose one could add anything. Don't remember where exactly on the page it was but it may be worth searching for.
