One more test: I edited my previous reply, and unchecked the notify box. Also, I am not longer watching the topic, this always turns off when I post a reply to a watched topic. This reply is a Quick reply.

there we have it, after the last post I clicked 'watch topic', and that turned on the email notification, and the edit and replies above turned off 'watch topic'.
To summarize: can it be setup such that email notifications never come on?

So the current process is: post (no email notifications), watch topic (email notifications on), edit topic or post 2nd reply (turn off email notifications, but now 'watch topic' is off), watch topic (email notifications are back on), repeat Sad

Sorry, the coffee has not kicked in yet - the issue, or gripe, is whenever I click 'watch topic' it turns on 'email notification'. I would like this disabled, possible?

when I click on a topic or go to another page, often I am transferred as a guest. Is this a hint?? Crying or Very sad

janlynn... it should not be this way.. you should stay logged in. However, I and other people I know using the forum do not have this problem. It could be because of your security settings or firewall or maybe you disabled cookies. In your security settings ( assuming you are on Windows ) and in your firewall, try making Shanghaiexpat a trusted site. You can also try to delete your old Shanghaiexpat cookies and see if this helps. Also make sure the clock on your computer is set to the right time and date. This could affect how cookies operate.

Pardon my previous ramblings, please let me try again: When I choose watch topic, that automatically turns on email notification. Is this a built in feature? The email notification box is not checked in my profile/account. Yes, when fully awake I do make better posts.

Chinese[] characters in posts are not appearing properly no matter what encoding you choose

What's the difference between 'sentbox' and 'outbox', in my mailbox?

Email notification - you should not be automatically subscribed to any forum or thread. It is someting you should choose. check the watched forums and topics list at the top of the page and unsub from anything you do not want to track. Also, you could try deleting your shanghaiexpat forum cookie. I wil check around for other things.. but there are a relatively small number of people subscribed to threads or forums.

Sentbox-Outbox - Outbox is when you send a PM but they have not looked at it. So you can withdraw it if you have second thoughts by deleting it from your outbox. Sentbox is when they actually open the pm, so you know they looked at it.

yes, as of 6am to 7am Friday 11-18 I can not access inbox or outbox, but it was working last night up to 8pm (last time I sent a message)

I did just find that by clicking the link in the email I received ("New private message has arrived") i was able to access my messages. The various links on shanghaiexpat.com however still do not work.

Every time I log in and click on a thread, nothing appears except the advertising banners at the top and a quick reply window on the right (that's how I'm able to post this now). I keep refreshing but it's the same thing. Once in a vey blue moon, I manage to get the thread.

However, as soon as I logout and am a guest, I'm able to click and read all threads with no problem. Why is this so? It's very frustrating!

Hmm.. first time I have heard this. Do you have cookies enabled? What browser are you using?

I'm using firefox and yes, cookies are enabled. Not sure why this is happening.

I was also asking yu888 previously about another problem of jpg pictures not loading as well. Often, I'm not able to see pictures posted by others. Just a table with the file name "DSCxxx.jpg" and number of times viewed. Sad

Hope you can help me fix this quick. This is getting tedious. I have to logout to read the threads, and log in to post a thread (without being able to see other posts) and then logout again to continue reading!

I would intuit since no one else is reporting this problem and it seems to work in all my browsers, you might have some problem with the way your PC or connection is configured. In Firefox, do you have ad blockers? pop up blockers? image blockers? If you are using Norton or some other firewall or ad blocking softwarde, do you have ad blocking or image blocking enabled? Do you have MSN, Yahoo, Google, Amazon or other toolbars in use that has some kind of blocking or page filtering enabled. These are the next things to check.

Thanks for your suggestions. I was also stumped. Checked all settings and configurations and seemed alright. Anyway, took a break during the weekend, didn't change any settings, and tonight, it's working fine again! Smile

it display something like this

Does this have any 'submit' tab? if i go down and save changes...nothing happens
