Post subject: question on schooling for 5 yr old

Hi, i've a 5 yr old kid who needs to start school next year, & we've kind of read about Soong Ching Ling's kindergarten in Puxi. We're not sure if we should register her now since we'll only be there by April next year. Can any kind parent already in Shanghai give us some advise. Our hesitation also stems from the fact that the fees are exorbitantly high as compared to what we're accustomed to plus the "limited space issue" as claimed by the school. Confused Or are there other recommended local schools.

registration gives you a confirmed placement - i don't think you are obliged to pay all the school fees until you start school? anyway, it's probably a little early now.
what about looking at other schools? if you are staying for 2 to 3 years, you might want to look at a proper international school rather than a kindergarten, which means your kid will have to start in a new environment again at first grade.

Thanks for the suggestions, Margarita & Heyhunts, so far my search has been confined thru the internet & a couple of books on Shanghai (Living & working abroad) so, my scope is still pretty limited. i do have reservations on homeschooling for my kids cos i really am not patient when it comes to teaching..... still we will keep the option open, Jeff has really posted good various websites that we still haven't fully covered. So, we'll still be on the lookout. Smile

Unfortunately international schools are generally a lot more expensive than what you may be used to PLUS many of them are full or close to full. This is particularly so (unfortunately for you) with younger children around 5. Many now ask for a deposit. This is because until recent times parents may have registered at several schools - who were then left with vacant spaces at the start of the year. Schools in Shanghai are now so spread out that I suggest you look around, find the school you want, then find a place to live nearby.

Thanks for all the advise, we'll only be there by April next year, & we haven't a clue as to where we will put up. I believe my husband's office will be in Pudong, and as for the school (Soong Ching Ling) is in Puxi), how far is it really to commute? Thanks for all your advise and concerns. We'll most likely make the decision after my husband's trip there in Oct / Nov. (hopeful)

Yes, a long commute from Pudong, particularly for a little one. If your husband works in the financial district it may be feasible to live half way between school and office. Just depends on what type of environment you're looking for.

As far as I know many friends who have little ones, they usually live within 1-3km of some famous kindergarten schools like Rainbow, Song Ching Ling etc... in Gubei/Puxi area and their fathers likely travel a distance by car to office/factory from 20 - 40 minutes away. It is most convenience if both can live near school as well as office/factory but this usually not happens easily.
There are quite a number of schools for little ones in Pudong but school fees can be a little high unless you opt for local operated ones.
At their tender age, it is not so important to choose which education system not until enroling for Year 1 or primary school. However it would be to your advantage to ask for at least 10K USD(local & Singapore International to 20K USD(US, UK, Canada system) for your primary school going kid. However, lately we have this SMIC company in Pudong set up a school from K1-2 to Year 16 at USD$ 4 K+ which is at a very affordable fees with good foreign teachers and it is in US system. Personaly I know this company very well, theyhave invested billion of US dolars and it is very profitable company for past couple of years with high dollars turnovers and they are here for long term with new set ups located in Tianjin, Beijing and Chengdu and hopefully the same success for their school here in Shanghai.
Hope this helps !

Bliss ..
