| Post subject: Home Network setup |
Hello
My apartment has Ethernet connectivity in all the rooms. However since I did not layout all the cable myself and I don’t know the typical layout for such network, can you tell me if you have this setup in your apartment how you designed your network (HUB or switch) Does any plug in the apartment can be the main (hub or switch entry) etc… Do I have to ask the internet provider for anything (fixed ip for example or I can deal with it with my hardware). Usually I do star shaped network (the Switch being the center point.)
Thanks a lot in advance

Ok, let's see if I can help you out.
First, let's talk about the cabling. I assume the jacks are RJ-45, shaped similar to a phone jack, but larger.
Second, where do the cables go too? There should be a punch-down black or patch cable somewhere in the house. Simply put, there should be a "panel" somewhere with the same number of "jacks" (or more) as you have in your apartment. Most likely is in a closet somewhere.
Third, once you have found "the other end" of your room jacks, you will need a hub. (A switch is too expensive and if there is only 1 or 2 people using the line, you won't notice anything). Depending on what device you use (most ISP's sell you a cable-modem which is also a router.) This will have a "line" side which connect to the internet via ADSL,DSL. If you don't need HIGH speed, you can use a regular modem and some simple software to be able to access the internet via this "server".
Finally, if you want to meet sometime and go over it, let me know. In my previous life I was a MIS manager and will help you get going.
My rate is 1 hour of drinking for 2 hours of work, luckily I only drink cheap beer <lol>. |

Hello Fombyf,
Sorry for not answering sooner to your nice offer, however I am having major issues with two machines (desktops) I am building so I have not been able to deal with my network for a week now which I will do the day I fix my problems. Actually, I am looking for someone who can help by swapping components in my machine to see if it is a hardware incompatibility or a motherboard malfunction. If you know someone who can do just that do not hesitate to help me
