Post subject: Qn by mum with baby new to Shanghai

Hi,
My husband has relocated to Shanghai last week and I will be joining him very soon. Being a working mum for more than a year, I'm really really helpless now when think of what can I do in Shanghai, with a 1 yr old baby girl. I will go nuts staying at home all day, being a full time housewife and mother ... Any good suggestion ??

Newmoonshan,
i know it will propably sound insenstive to tell you this yet i feel that the best way to get over your thoughts of helplessness is to wait until you arrive. You said it, you have a 1yr old baby girl and thats is plenty believe me.. being here and adjusting to a whole new environment and culture. My suggestion is dont think too much or worry that will only stress you and your baby and when you arrive you will stress your husband and that is not fun, especially after a relocation you all need to be happy, together and enjoying this experience.
I always worked, all my life since I was 13 and when I cam to SHA, i felt that my whole purpose for living was "work". that was more than 7 yrs ago... guess what? it isnt, there is more out there than working to make you feel worthy. Enjoy your child, be with her, this is a great city full of things to do. Friends will come along as you live here and activities will come up, please dont rush yourself.
We have a 17mo old baby girl ourselves, I love just being with her yet her and i are working on a home based business, still in developmental stages but its our project, we do everything together. You will enjoy it too. Hang in there no worries and see you when you arrive?

Hi Newmoonshan,
I've got to agree with Margarita. I'm in pretty much the same situation as you. We moved to Shanghai 2 weeks ago, I've been on maternitiy leave for 5 months but prior to that I was working. I'm loving being at home with my little girl. I would never have thought I could be happy staying home but I can't imagine going back to work yet. It seems like Shanghai has a huge amount to offer both worthwhile (volunteering, teaching etc) and fun. Feel free to PM me if you want to get together once you get here and maybe we can figure out what some of these things are!

Hi Margarita, Alexinchina,
Thank you for your advice. Yeah u ladies r right, I do worry too much. Has been keep thinking what activities can I do in Shan beside just staying at home. My husband is extremely busy, so I need to keep myself occupy so that I will not bother him too much.
Perhaps I really worry too much. Is there any association that you join to meet more friends ?

Hi,
I haven't got around to it but I'm thinking Brits Abroad as a start and then maybe American Womens association. There's also these Shanghai expat mixers (Sat morning and Wednesday afternoon) which sound like a good way to meet people. Where are you coming from?
Margarita, my daughter is a little over 5 months.

LLL is the La Leche League and it's a breastfeeding support/info network with branches all over the world. Breasefeeders (or those who want to learn more about breastfeeding) meet every month. The Shanghai group meets every 2nd Wed. Since the leader of the LLL is away for a few monthes, we are having informal "mom's support group" at member's homes till she returns in Jan. This month is at my house on Nov. 10. All are welcome to attend. PM me for directions/info. The more the merrier!

All you lucky young mothers! Appreciate this time of your lives, when you are able to do nothing much more than simply enjoy life and devote your time to bringing up the little treasures God has entrusted to you. As a Grandmother (my granddaughter lives in London), I envy you! (If anyone needs a babysitter at any time, you know where to find me).

Oh my gosh! I cannot believe I found this forum! It is like an answer to my prayers!!!! I have also posted on another forum looking for a playgroup to go to. I'm a nursing mother of a 5 month old. We have only been here a week and I'm already feeling quite lost and a little helpless! Perhaps u all can guide me alittle. Do most of u live in Gubei?

You can also check out the International Mothers Support Group (IMSG). Has one meeting a month in both Puxi and Pudong and is a good way to meet people. Try mailing
