| Post subject: Shipping a Car to China |
I am thinking about shipping my car from the states to shanghai. I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what paper work i'd need to fill out, how long it takes (to ship), the costs, and licenses issues? Is there a tax? Thanks. |

what do you mean that the cost is buying a car here? i heard that there was some kind of exception where you are able to import cars as long as you have proof that you own it. the car i would like to ship also should meet any emission standards (it's a 2003 model). |

just found out from a friend who imported a car recently from US.
1. owner(s) of a company (foreign investment)
2. car is under importer title
3. import duty is 75% of car value considering mileage---so the less mileage, the higher the duty
4. freight is around USD1000 by ship
5. shipping time approx. 20 days to 1 month
6.lots of paperwork once the car gets in here, and the owner has to be present mostly all the times to the customs office in Huan Pi S. Rd.
7. license plate RMB30000 or so
8. handling costs
it added up RMB300K for all the above. his car cost US$25K.
But he says it's worth it, since the car is sold higher than RMB500K here.
So, it really depends on if its worth it or not.
Car prices are coming down, BMW318i is now only RMB390K or less. It's not even worth it to import the 5series, said my friend.
However, considering the traffic condition and the driving behaviors(also the pedestrians, too), think TWICE before importing or buying a car. To own a car here, you'd better hire a driver, too. |

thanks for the info. 75% of the car value? how do they assess the value specifically? my car was bought 42k USD new, is about a year old and roughly 15k miles on it. do they go by blue book? could i find someone to assess it at a lower value? again, thanks for the help..it doesn't really sound like it's worth it. i don't mind the traffic, but 75% (plus the parkign space i'll have to buy) is ridiculous. |

the duty will be decreased to 25% next year, however there are still VAT 17% and another 8%(I forgot what for), still totalling 50% overhead.
the value should be based on the bluebook, and yes, it should be able to be assesed lower, depending if you can find the guan-xi.
your car is still quite new, have you checked the market price for your car here? what's the bluebook value of it now? jsut guessing, your overhead probably also will total up like RMB300k or so. pm me more details, and I can check out the estimate for you from the importer, if you like.
but also, they said since the road condition here is not so great as in the USA, they suggest to ship something rugged like SUV's here. just for reference.
and Niko, you are both right and ..., since if the car is a higher end one, it is still worth it to ship it here. but don't think about shipping Japanese makes here. |

So any happy endings on this topic? I am currently seriously considering shipping my personal car from the US. The cost-benefit for selling is pretty much the same as trying to ship it here. Plus, I get the benefit of enjoying my car and driving it here.
Any updates on the current tax rates and procdeures? Any new insghts?
All information and pointers will be appreciated!

I've been contemplating the same idea to ship my 2004 BMW 330i from the US to Shanghai later this year - I just love the car! But I was told a new regulation (effective December) bans all imports of used cars. Can someone please confirm if this is true??? |

All the foreign people who are working in China can import their cars.
I had worked in a local Im&Ex company as a project manager for many years. If you want I can help you to import your vehicle.
The cost is:
1. Service Fee: RMB85,000 (export your car form USA, freight your car from USA to Shanghai, automobile import permit application, import documents preparation, import declaration&clearance,China Custom inspection handling,3C inspection handling, etc)
2. Tax: 60% of the value of your car, which includes Duty, Vat and Consumer Tax.
