| Post subject: cd drive not recognizing any disks |
Recently my cd drive stopped reading disks (data, dvd, and cds).
I was watching a dvd, when the computer hung up...I rebooted and tried to resume watching the dvd, but my dvd software gave me a "unsupported format" error.
Has anyone else had this problem and can anyone give me any suggestions. I have a 2 month old averatec notebook, I run Windows XP, installed SP2 about a month ago, and use powerdvd and windows media player.

Could be a warranty job. I always suspect XP for everything, but I haven't heard of this particular problem, so Mr Gates may be innocent. Check the drive first. |

Edgewood,
Thanks for the response. I tried device manager...and it claims that the drive is working properly. I have contacted the manufacturer, and hopefully I will not have to send the computer away.

Two things: Check to see if you have the latest driver for your CD/DVD drive; you can usually find downloads on manufacturer's sites (either your machine or drive mfgr) for most drivers.
Second: I've had a problem in the past using Windows Media Player and Power DVD (Dell Dimension P6 running XP Home SP2). I'm not as down on MS as Edgewood is but, in this case, Mr. Gates may not be entirely innocent: I found that when I updated Media Player components (I very rarely use Media Player, but I sometimes would update it along with Windows components), that it would cause PowerDVD to stop reading disks. It could be an unintended conflict, but I give the MS folks more credit in the smarts department and figure they code Media Player to act as the default player or else just take up the right interrupts to cause everything else trying to access the drive to lock. Reinstall PowerDVD or update it, if you're not running the newest build. My dvd drive was experiencing what seemed like a general failure until I reloaded PowerDVD, now the drive is trouble free in all applications again. Good luck. |

Lawdude, that's a new one to me. I'm going to test it out this weekend to see if I can induce the same problem. Thanks for the info. |

Thanks for the responses...I tried them with no luck. It looks like I may have to bite the bullet and contact the warranty department.
Thanks for the help.
