| Post subject: "Error on page" |
I am constantly getting "error on page", even on Windows Update. On this site, I've got it as "Java Script error" when trying to submit a story. Can anyone advise me on how to fix this problem? (Seems I am the most bugged person in Shanghai, am getting a complex here!) |

Two separate problems, probably...
On shanghaiexpat.com, the "Javascript errors" are due to the fact that this new version of the site is not completely coded yet--that is, there are functions and pages that we haven't finished with yet and so those functions or scripts return errors when loading. Apologies for that and we're working to finish all the site functions in the next few weeks.
As for "error on page," there are a number of possible causes:
1. Your security settings in windows or a firewall are blocking scripts that the page you're looking at needs to run (although usually not a problem on the MS update site).
2. The connection is too slow and the server is timing out before you can load the whole page (more an issue for dialup; if you're on adsl, this shouldn't be an issue).
I'd check your browser and firewall (you should be running one!) settings first. Actually, some "error on page" messages can be ignored if you're not running into problems using that page. I've set my machine to block certain scripts that will cause similar messages, but unless it's preventing me from using a function of that page, I ignore it. |

Thanks for that .. BUT .. my problem is, I need to download the latest security update for IE. And I can't. And I don't know why. And I don't know how to fix it. Yes, I am on broadband. I get that 'error on page', and it will go no further .. simply CANNOT download an update. More help, please ? |

Just for the record .. I added Windows Update site to my list of 'trusted sites' .. and hey, presto! suddenly I was able to download the update. Result? My pages are now loading more slowly than they used to, and I'm constantly having to 'refresh' ... O woe is me ... |
