Hello,
I know you can go to Suzhou, Hangzhou.
For my part, I went to Suzhou last June. This city is famous for its numerous gardens.
Just go to the Railway station (line 1 /2) Be careful : the tickets can be sold very fastly!
Advice : buy soft seats. It's not expensive (22 rmb one way / around 7 for a hard seat)
AND Buy your ticket for your trip back as soon as you arrive in Suzhou and always soft seat!
When my boyfriend and I managed to negotiate the tickets in the street, it was very very difficult to get in the train!!
To sum up, "hard seat" for me means "hard to get in the train"....I cannot remember how I could get in without being hurt.
Oh last thing, I went there on Sunday and i was quite crowded....
Enjoy!! |

you can also go to Wu Zhen, Tong Li or Zhou Zhuang. There are buses leaving from the Shanghai stadium every morning. Tickets are cheap. Those towns are typical south-east China towns with canals in and around the town. Each has special goodies of its own. There is no breath-taking views but is still quite nice to spend a day out of Shanghai. |

We went to Zhou Zhuang for a daytrip in July after we'd only been here a few weeks. It was rather confusing for us as "new to China" Americans and extremely HOT. We were bombarded with people offering guide services on the street, but could tell that the only English they spoke was "need a guide?" We assumed that we could find an official English tour or hire a private guide at the ticket office - not available and our request was very funny to the 10 people sitting around in the office. We wandered aimlessly for awhile - not understanding that the ticket includes admission to the various sites: the temple, the homes, museum, etc. Finally we started following this rather insistant toothless woman who spoke no English but led us to each of the spots on our tour. She had no ticket and waited for us outside each site. Then we entered the temple area and they made her leave the area and we never saw her again - we felt bad that we did not give her any money - she looked like she could use it.
Our overall experience was that it was crowded and HOT - July is not the time to go! |
