| Post subject: Home stuff: beyond Simply Life? |
Do you know where we can get well-designed home utensils/ wall furnishings? Too much from Simply Life already.
Is there any place selling South-Eastern Asian imports, at reasonable price? For example, the beat-copper plates and bowls from Thailand, as used in "Face"?
Thanks a bunch! |

There are some interesting shops on Shan Xi Road, basically between Huai Hai road and Jian Guo Road. Don't really know the names of them but it is not a bad Saturday stroll to see what is around.
A fantastic shop on Hong Qiao Road, not far from The White House. Think the address is 1496 or something close to that ... very obvious from the street though. Also in the same area is a small shop run by a woman who brings in decorator items from many different parts of SE Asia. She is a bit harder to find ... tucked down on of those antique alleys in the same area.
Anthony Chao is another shop that specializes in textiles, things like pillows etc.
In one of the OBI's or Home Mart towards Ming Hang (not the one at Jin Jiang Park) there is a small booth inside the store that offers a small but good selection of goods brought in from Thailand. Things like lamps, bowls, candlesticks, etc.
I haven't really seen the beat-copper plates but I haven't been on the lookout. Someone asked me about those last night so I will try to keep my eyes peeled.
Happy Shopping! |

Thanks, Mag! Ever well-informed and helpful...
I have also been collecting Chinese handicrafts, such as hand-puppets and masks. You know any place in SH, apart from the usual suspects (Chenghuang Temple; DongTai Rd., etc), where they may sell folk arts at exorbitant prices? |

There is a museum shop that is located right on Feng Yang Lu, basically at the bottom of Dong Ping Road. I think the museum itself is called The Shanghai Folk Art Museum or something like that. Inside the actual museum they have a gift shop and I think I noticed that there is now a small shop located on the actual street. Will try to have a look at it (I walk by everyday, but on the other side of the street).
This is going to be an offbeat suggestion, but have you tried the Friendship Store (near the Bund)? I haven't been in years but I seem to recall that they had huge quantities of handicrafts. They will be hand done but most likely for mass production as opposed to individual pieces. Most of the items are really more or less for tourists, so it may not be what you are looking for ... but you never know! I picked up a raw silk robe there five years ago that I still adore. Can't find it anymore but I think about it all the time ...
Sounds like you are going to amass a great collection of artful objects! |

ShangPin is a nice home store with a branch at the ShanXi flower market and one further south at 227 ShanXi. They have a website at www.shangpin.com.cn
Asian View Furniture Gallery is a little further south at 233 ShanXi and has some nice Thai and Indonesian imports in addition to furniture. |

i quite liked (i thinkit's called) Chris and Chris on Huaihai road. very chic, mostly dark wood, colossal pieces (mirrors, pots, benches).
not sure if you mean 1426 hong qiao lu mags? that's the one with nice old things in the back and a showroom in the front where they custom make furniture, dining chairs with slip covers, gorgeous lamps, deep sofas. we had quite a few pieces made there. very professional (for china!). won't bargain too much with you tho... |
