| Post subject: Anybody using China Netcom for Internet access? |
I'm doing some testing of ISP's in Shanghai and would very much like to know if anyone on this board is using China Netcom as their Internet ISP in SH, either thorugh their 2M service or through their 10M shared service.
If so, please send me a PM and I would like to arrnge for a brief tracert test (I can explain). This will only take a miniute or two and woud be very helpful to us. Payment can be arranged in beers at local tavern of your choice.
Thanks in advance,

They are entirely different companies.
We believe China Netcom has a superior connection to certain western websites, but need to test this theory. |

I'm using CNC - speed is ok, no major complains. Big problem is the great firewall of China (does China Telecom ADSL get the same problem?), there's no way I can get into Yahoo! services, and if I'm lucky enough, I might get into Yahoo! mail. Someone ought to teach the bloody Govt to respect our basic rights to access all forms of information. |

Oh before I forget - did I mention the useless technical helpdesk who kept quiet throughout the call despite the fact that I hit the button that says "Press 2 for English".
They refuse to admit that there's a DNS error, gave me all the wrong input, and suggested I send an electronic enquiry to the customer service of those respective websites that I can't access. Now thats simply daft! Talking about hopelessness... |

I use CNC too. It was just ok. I have same problem as Jasmyn,
slow speed when using with Yahoo (us server).
I found a new trick, try it and it works!
http://cn.mail.yahoo.com
or
http://www.yahoo.com.cn
Login as if you do on yahoo.com, (login and then password), click enter.
Though it's in CHinese but all Yahoo! around the world have the same
format.
I found that it 's faster when i login via Chinese site, and then I reach my normal Yahoo!Mail page in English |

I always thought CNC and China Telecom were basically the same company. China Telecom is horrible in connecting to The West. The latency in the sprintlink.net connection is abysmal. |

Research is on-going and interesting. Will post a summary when we have completed the process (which is taking us into many odd corners and strange environs.) Might take another couple of weeks to come to a resting spot. Thanks to all who have responded and assisted. |

| Post subject: Yahoo Mail connection |
Cata,
I tried the two Chinese Yahoo websites you suggested, and both worked much faster. So thanks for the tips. Right now it's 10:40 AM. The Internet traffic maybe slow. I'll have to wait until the night time to see if they really work well as they should.
I've been so frustrated accessing my Yahoo Mail and many other US websites. It takes forever to open a page. And sometimes, they're never opened. I have signed up ADSL service through China Telecom. I even upgraded to 200K at 150RMB/month. I haven't seen any improvement in its speed. So I would love to know if there are better and faster way to browse the western websites.
A friend of mine said I should set up POP3 with Yahoo, and access my mail via Microsoft Outlook. Don't know how to do it though. |

Woohoo!! I'm surfing at very satisfactory speed on CnC now & surprisingly no DNS error when accessing "difficult" websites. Have they dfinally come to their sense or what?
tttwww, try connecting via user-defined proxy servers. You can find many overseas proxies @ www.proxy4free.com but use the anonymous ones for goodness sake. |

Hey tried to do some research on my own about CNC but failed. the english website has no useful info about pricing, and the phone # listed there, noone answers! Can anyone be so kind as to give me this info? We have China telecom now and it's utter shite. Sure I could fiddle with proxies until it's acceptable, but I'd feel good about supporting a company that just does things RIGHT.
I'd much rather just get a cable modem!!! no stupid logins and i get the impression it's not too popular here, so the cable shared bandwidth shouldn't be a problem. Plus, we could cancel this telephone landline that we have no use for at all. |

If anyone wants to know the speed from your place to Netcom, can do a tracert with 210.22.70.3. It's the IP in Netcom's datacenter. |
