| Post subject: Christmas in Shanghai |
I was just wondering how expat families spend Christmas in Shanghai? Do most people go back home for the holiday season? Are there any special traditions or activities? Should we bring the tree from home? |

Were my family lives is very hot during Summer. I am looking forward to a cooler Christmas. The kids have always wanted to experience a White Christmas so I said I would look into this whilst we are in China. Perhaps Christmas in a northern part of China where it snows. |

Most of the expat families I know are planning to take vacations or go home over the Christmas holidays - mainly because it's a nice chunk of time off from school. I still plan to set up my tree and have an early Christmas before we go on holiday. |

um....yup..you can feel the cooler Christmas in shanghai.but it's very hard for you to see the white Christmas in shanghai...no snowing in shanghai..or maybe just a little.
if u really want to see the white Chrismas, i suggest you should go to the northern part of china, like ji ling,ha er bing...these city..
also if your family like ski, then you willl feel better in those city.. |

I have heard there is a nice place up north where there is an ice festival each winter. Would this be a good place to spend Christmas? Perhaps it would be too cold? |

I think you are referring to Harbin, which is home to the International Ice Carving Competition and the Ice Lantern Festival celebrations. The Christmas temperature ranges from -10 to -20 degrees. It sounds like an interesting place to spend Christmas. Certainly different to the traditional hot and humid Aussie Christmas. |

We just bought a new Christmas tree, it is lovely. Do most people in Shanghai have real or fake trees? |

I visited Harbin two times before (1st time over 10 yrs and 2nd time about 3-4 year ago ) This is a very nice place to visit and the ice scuptures, ice lanterns... are really fascinating. Remember to visit the places ( the ice/snow world and Zhao Lin Park) when become dark because the ice scupture are much better with different lights/colour then plain white/yellow in the day.
On my last visit I stayed at the Shangri-XX hotel which offer good service so accomodation is nothing to worry. The parks are fairly close to where I stayed so we simply take taxi (I rembered about RMB10-20 at that time).
There are also skiing parks (unfortunately I don't know how to ski)
Another place could go in daytime may be Tai Yang Dao ( Sun Island) which is located in middle of a river (can simply walk because the river is frozen). I remember in winter there will be some sort of international snow scuputuring competition....
However Harbin is a really cold place (well that's also the fun of it) - at time i visited if I was not mistaken it was -20 to -30+ degrees C. Just make sure to wear enough colthes and take care of the camera or it may not be functioning/slow. |

What a good point!! The Christmas tree is just a tradition for those who needs something to do around Christmas time, showing of their decration "technique". Christmas is not about trees, it's about giving, and being with the ones that you love, NO? |

MonMon, Harbin sounds pretty cold. The pictures I have seen of the place look lovely though. Is Sun Island in Harbin?
Syphide, I agree Christmas is about giving, but most little kids love Christmas trees. I know in my family, trimming the tree and watching the the lights on the tree most nights is really enjoyable. |

Our Christams tree is trimmed and the house is looking very festive. I don't know about everyone else but in my family we love all the festive trimmings. The whole family gets together to celebrate and laugh as we trim the tree and decorate the house and garden. |
