| Post subject: BAKERY- Where is the best quality and priced bakery food? |
Hi All,
Like many of us, I love fresh, hand made, aromaic and mouth-watering bakery food. I guess being a foreigner in this great country I still desire those little things in life to make my time here more enjoyable.
Most of us grew up with a bakery not too far from our houses. We got excited as we walked closer because we could smell the fresh scent of the bread being cooked in the ovens.
SO where you do go for your favourite bakery delights? I know of some very good and very well priced bakeries in Beijing. But alas, I do not know where to find in SHanghai. So I am seeking your help to find your favourite bakeries (NOT CHINESE BAKERY) where one can go and buy some mouth-pleasing delights on a Sunday morning. Or any morning for that matter.
Love to receive your ideas and remarks. Enjoy your lazy Sunday morning, those Danishes and Croissants.
Happy Eating.

Not at all, as far as I am aware the croissants are the same price as anywhere else. Its a German bakery/deli place on the 3rd floor?, they also sell meat there too. |

And what price are you talking about here? What you think is reasonable, others will think is extravagant. |

I think it is ok and comparable to anywhere else that would sell imported meat from Oz. It is my usual Sunday ritual - go to the Sherry, buy nice bread and bacon, then pop over to the Friendship store buy an international newspaper and some eggs. Then come home and have a bacon and egg sandwich with a nice cup of coffee and a read of the newspaper. You can't beat it. |

Hey Orca - it aint nothing spectacular or anything but the City Supermarket at Times Square has fresh bread, rolls, etc you can try at very cheap prices (like 4 rmb for a half loaf of bread). I know they have croissants there too (off the top of my head 5 rmb each) but I cant say i have ever seen danishes or anything like that there. Ah how I would love a coffee scroll right now..... |

Recently I am enjoying the BreadTalk on the ground floor at Reffles City on Xizang Rd. (C). It's a Singapore brand. |

Yamazaki, a Japanese bakery under the dept store next to Jingan Temple on Nanjing Road is a great place for fresh bread plus interesting pastries etc. Pretty good supermarket there too. I get my weekly supply of bread from here. The entrance to the supermarket / bread shop is down the escalators just behind the MontBlanc shop. |

Bread Talk is pretty good, there is one recently opened in Gubei Carrefour. There are also quite a few decent bakeries on Hong Mei Lu near the City Supermarket, Yanan rd area. |

i love yamazaki. i must say that the quality of life in Shanghai (for me at least) is better because of the presence of Japanese restaurants and businesses.
The bread at yamazaki is not western-style, but still excellent and of creative quality (better than Bread Talk in my opinion).
There is a little cafe section where you can enjoy a decent brew and one of their products.
And my god, don't get me going on the supermarket at Sogo. It's got all these cheap bento sets, sashimi, sushi...etc etc, and the coffee/tea selection is good. And there;s a key coffee cafe for proper brews.
I think almost everything that could be found at City supermarket could be found at Sogo supermarket.
I'm so going to move to Jingan district for the supermarket. |

If anyone has time and the inclination, why not put down in this forum a bit of a list of what you can buy where you go and how much. Like a short menu of sorts. I am sure it will help many of us decide what to get for our next Sunday Brunch. |

Hi,
need help finding cheap bread..???...turning the fen around and around...Marriott Hongqiao Hotel Deli Shop had some 50% off deal after 20:00hrs for the Cheap Charlies, throw them bread products in the oven...in case you have one...
really stingy? there should be possibilities to score some free bread stuff around 22:30hrs. while most Shanghai 5* star hotel close there evening "dinner" buffets....
Happy Trails! Hans
ps:rumors only, there's going to be a promo, buy a loaf of sliced toast bread at any Shanghai Lawson convenience store and win a Scooter!
check with a Lawson outlet near you! |

WOW!!!! Thanks for the "heads up' Hans. Do I need to buy any particular bread to enter the competition? Or will any loaf do?
Could you also direct me to any "Soup Kitchens" here in Shanghai that may serve some late night meals to poor and destitue foreigners?
Thanks for the assist.
Has anyone tried PAO'S at Xintiandi? They make a mean mini-pizza and their Chocolate Donuts are very sweet and decadent. Just what the doctor ordered. |

i also love yamazaki on nanjing road very much...the aroma is just too good to resist....but i think it's a bit pricy compared to Breadtalk or other local bakery. One loaf of bread is around 14 RMB depending on the type...if price is not a big problem..then i'd say Yamazaki for sure!!!!!!! |

Try the Hilton Hotel near Jing'An si.
Very good Deli. Croissant around 5 yuan, baguette but also Rye bread for 27 rmb. Sounds expensive ? You can easily keep the rye bread 2 to 3 days if you put it in the fridge. That's how you recognize good quality bread. Much better than the so-called baguette sold around town at 9 rmb that become too hard after an hour... |

Hi,
Portman Ritz-Carlton deli (bread/cake) counter in City Supermarket American Centre (next Starbucks) has a great selection of western (European) style breads. rolls starting around 2.5RMB and various Croissants around 4-7RMB.
Happy Trails Hans
ps: prices might not be right for the one yuan coin turners.... |

Bastiaan Bakery and Konditorei on the Hongmei Pedestrian Street makes great breads and pretzels and an apfelkuchen to die for. Very German/Dutch in style with lots of breads with seeds, etc. |

Aloha99, Hans, Milla and everyone,
Thanks very much for your suggestions and ideas. Looks as though there are some good places to get some bread and bread products here in Shanghai to satisfy the Sunday morning urge. |
