| Post subject: Friday Night - Fish & Chips (mushy pea entirely optional |
I've been in Shanghai for 7 weeks and missing my Fish & Chips (with mushy pea) like crazy!!!
Anyone interested or game this Friday for Fish & Chips? Yeah, its almost religious to eat them on a Friday. ROFL Ok, mushy pea is entirely optional, either you hate pea, or we can't even get them here.
All suggestions (Pudong/Puxi) are welcome. Let's start fishing around...!! |

The Eager Beaver, (near Dongping Lu, opposite Cottons') is without question the place for Fish & Chips. 35RMB, huge piece of fish. It is sensational. There Hamburger is also great. |

I'm a big fish and chips fan myself, and I think the question is what are the chips like at Eager Beaver mat? Are they chunky chips and full of grease, or are they thin like french fries? Because if they're thin then it's not the real deal. |

Just had Fish n Chips today, place called the Dublin Exchange (HSBC Building) Pudong, they tasted good, no mushy peas, hard to find in Shanghai, real malt vinegar, only downside quite expensive think i paid 70RMB, but did not care about that cause i was hungry for Great British food |

Oh Gawwwwwwwd... I hate those crinkle cut, they are so blant and never quite pass the "firmness test".
Not sure whats the standard or widely acceptable price for F&C here, though 70RMB sounds errr... ok... for F&C in a restaurant/cafe. But feels like its against "economic principle" to eat something at 70RMB when you can have the same at half the price elsewhere. LOL!!
What about Malone or Always Cafe? Do they suffice the Brit palate?
Hmm... is it just me, or have gone Fish & Chips gone passe here? |

I'm not sure, where is the Dublin Exchange? Pudong seems kind of far for me to go for f+c. I work till 7.30 around Hong Qiao so the Dong Ping Lu place seemed temptingly close (and good value). Going to Pudong on a Friday night isn't too tempting for me I'm afraid. Do we know what the chips are like there? I need all the info to make a decision!!

Dublin Exchange HSBC TOWER; 101 YIN CHENG DONG LU
TEL.6841 0649
What you get is 4 little fish fillets, sorry but the chips are frozen, but still tasty, horse radish sauce, and side salad, the manager is a chef and comes from Ireland, so he has an idea of how fish n chips should be, another down side i think i should warn you about is this caters mainly for expat bankers and the like, so prices are more expensive, but it's a nice warm freindly pub, with lots of freindly characters.
Hope that helps you in your search for one of the Great British Dishes. |

Yep Jeff, open to all die-hard F&C fans
Bella, you're right about the location. Seems wee out of place to go on a Friday night so are we pushing for Eagle Beaver then?
Richvenom are you in or out?
To facilitate arrangement for Friday night (it can be a bloody nightmare getting a table), a raise of hands again, how many interested parties? |

Horseradish sauce on fish and chips?
Well, I have said it once, and I'll say it again. The person that opens a proper stylie fish and chip shop here will be a self made millionaire within 6 months. You have to have the proper service though by a buxom lady - "do you want salt and vinegar luv?" and it should also sell gravy. I HATE fish and chip shops that have no gravy. Anyway Commando - are you up for it? you source the fish and chips etc - I'll serve. |

I seem to remember the fish at Malones being rather small. Tasted alright though.
Always is awful. . . Really bad.
The Eager Beaver might be the best. |

I second that. They have decent fish. And hey how hard is it to make decent chips. They can blanche fry some potatoes then flash fry them. I'm sure things will change if we all let them know. Their cheeseburgers are the best in town too. I'm also game! |

Drizzle I think you definitely have a point there, I've often thought that's the restaurant niche Shanghai was missing! They should also sell battered sausage and meat pies, with a jar of pickled eggs on the counter! Go for it! |

i've managed to find some dry peas, a little like the stuff we get back home, will have to try them out to see if they turn mushy, it says they will on the packet... but in this country 75% of things written or said is a blatant lie, will you keep you posted.. |
