Post subject: Ladies of the Night

This is not the most tasteful subject but my burning curiousity is getting the better of me. I am new to Shanghai. I have to a few conclusions based on my limited experiences. I was wondering if someone could comment on them.

In Maoming Lu there seems to be bars where any western male is open game (Judys Too), bars where the girls are somewhat available (Manhatten) and places where it doesn't seem clear (Babyface). In the first two types of bars, cash is going to be exchanged. Where the situation is unclear, some of the girls are highclass hookers, some are not interested in expats and are just on a night out and some of the girls are looking for some western action on the basis of it being either cool to be with a westerner on the basis that they get to access the westerner's wedge. Serious girls looking to make a sincere connection don't go to bars with pulling on their mind.

Is this about the size of it?

Also on Hengshan Lu the Hennessey bars where the girls play nonsensical games of dice with you are to be avoided at all costs on the basis of the immense tedium involved therein

And the buying drinks thing, what is the 'business model there?' What do the girls get paid? or they employed by the bar

Mashup,

The bar girls get paid a basic wage, then commission for how many orders they write....

Here's how it usually goes: you order a drink from one of the girls, she play dice with you. You loose, you drink more, the bar makes more money, she gets paid more. She looses, she drinks more - it all goes to the bar anyway! Her loosing is like buying her a drink - right? It's all about income for the bar.

The after part....well I'm not so clear on that...you'd have to ask the more experienced on this website.

I'd stop short of generalising though 'cos different bars have different 'types' of girls and it'd be wrong to allude to them all as 'ladies of the night'...

There are better ways to spend you money than drinking with hostesses.

boy are you in for a learning experience Mashup.

not all the girls at these bars are "working girls", many will only talk and play dice with you. nothing more. some will let you take things further. don't assume anything is my advice for you.
