Seems like all of you boy & gals are browsing foreign web sites like I do! I can also tell that you are not fully aware of the China's filtering concept also known as 'The Great Firewall of China" and its limited bandwidth. CT-CNC-UNICOM-NETCOM and etc, ALL offers a great DSL/CABLE/FTTB service locally and in many cases nation-wide. You certainly getting enough for what you're paying huhhh. GO & SUBSCRIBE!
The problem is content filtering and pipe size for overseas' internet access. As far as I am aware, China's in/out pipe for the whole country's outside-world internet use is a 200MB (+ content filtering and frustrating blocking kidding, etc...). So, that to say, if you want the full speed of this 'shared' 200MB, you'll have to get ME offline and probably a few other hundred thousands more before getting your expected Int'l peer-2-peer speed for 120 kuai/month. No matter a 512k/1M/2M ADSL, cable, wireless, you name it all... it will have to be squeezed in this limited 200MB pipe so what's the point for 20 kuai more now!?
Solution here.... get a bloody "anonymous proxy server IP address". Pretty much the only option we all have to speed up our web requests 5X faster. HK, Macau and Japan based proxy addresses are to be look at.
My experience: 120rmb/month 512 Kbps using proxy. downloading from anywhere around the globe at 150-300Kbps 24/24. Give it a try!

Did I just manage in 2 minutes to set up this proxy thing and to check cnn.com and rsf.com?
Wow. Ok. Thx EldiablO!
1-Proxy101: http://www.stayinvisible.com
2-Check proxies by location and type
3-Select proxy (HK for instance)
4-Open your browser's connection parameters. Choose to connect through a proxy. Enter proxy address and port.
5-Et voila!
Apparently though, you have to choose a "transparent" proxy and not an "anonymous" one otherwise you cant open the afore-mentioned sites.

| Post subject: Proxies? What like Hudsucker Proxy? |
Whoa!! Slow down!
I'm embarrassed to admit it but that was way over my head. Could you please dumb down that post for me?
I'm new to Shanghai and I am planning on getting an internet connection at my home next month. Its going to be through the cable, not phone, lines. And now you are telling me I won't be able to read the news on CNN?
Should I cancel my application for internet service? Or just go ahead and use it but go through a proxy (whatever that is). The Hudsucker proxy was supposed to be a fake replacement for a company's CEO, who was an idiot but turned out to have great dumb luck. I hope this isn't a similar definition for internet service.
Regards,
Ben |

The proxy is just a server somewhere outside of China. You setup your browser to go through this proxy server when connecting to other websites, CNN or whatever porn site, which are indeed banned here. Thats why its called proxy, it goes in between you and the server you want to reach.
Unlike what the Devil was writing in the first post, you still have to go through China's internet connection (200MB or whatever that is) to reach this proxy, the only difference is the proxy server is not on the banned list. Of course you need to own internet connection to China internet backbone, using any provider you like! This doesnt make any difference as to your choice of supplier, bandwidth etc.
Note that proxies often come down, change, get banned, have their own restricted list, etc... so be ready to change your settings often. You need to get updated lists from sites such as the one Ben suggested in his post. Going through proxies might also reduce your connection speed, unlike what was suggested above. However it will help with many websites, such as yahoo profiles, photos, etc which seems to be difficult to access from China for some reasons unknown to me + all the porn you want + CNN's propaganda. |

Frenchlover... here goes a few one for your entertainment! If you are using a China Telecom ADSL, tracert the route of the proxies listed below get back to us with amazing coments (yes, it bypass the limited and filtered china backbones!) You can run a bandwidth test at http://performance.toast.net/ If you are behing CT networks, you should range between 800 Kb - 1,000 KB. N-joy the ride... and have fun!
NOTE: Proxy below blocks porn and warez. If you browse other than dodgy website!?, you should have a great dwload experience.
