Post subject: Nintendo DS in Shanghai

Where can I buy one?

I live in Nanjing and am tripping in this weekend. I heard that the units can be bought for a little cheaper than in NJ, and I'm really keen to get my hands on one.

Also: there's no way they could be pirate / inferior quality right? I mean it's a sophisticated machine, not some streetside vendor's DVD ...... I can't help but doubt though given the amazing skills of the Chinese pirates and the price makes me nervous too Confused

I doubt you're going to find anything different here than you would in nanjing. Your best bet would be to try an electronics department store, though I've never seen one of them here. Worse comes to worse, download an emulator.

i have seen one in hong kong last weekend briefly and am soooo not impressed. The Gameboy was one thing but I think that Nintendo is just going down very soon.
I am going to wait for the PSP from Sony for another couple of months and then buy the original one... First indications I've read, is that it comes for around 120GBP , with a lot of accesories...

I've seen both DS and PSP here in shanghai and being a huge video game fan (since my first amstrad CPC) I must agree with TheFiddler.
And eventhough most of the video game industry seems to support Nintendo's DS, when I finally saw it a few days ago I was rather disapointed by the machine, the dual screen concept's interesting but nothing amazing.
But when i finally saw the PSP I was really impressed but the design and most of all the large screen that covers it, not mentionning seing a full 3D game running smoothly in such a small piece of technology.
I'm not a huge Sony product fan (xbox rulezzzz) but I must admit that this is a true piece of art that they realized and it has its place next to your iPod.

NB:TheFiddler if I were u I wouldn't buy it right now as it seems tht the battery only lasts for 3.5h with max light and sound and that sony's working in improving this so If I were you I'd wait a bit.Not mentionning that it also costs around 3500RMB here

Have you seen it in the Playstation shop ? Read about the battery problems and also about problems with the disc being ejected like an arrow when you hold the PSP in a certain way ( I kid you now, I've seen a video of it via www.gamespot.com )
It's massively massively massively overpriced. The original one with a lot of extras comes for 120GBP in England once it's released, i think i posted that before.
I will certainly wait until there is more software available, but thanks for the hint ....

No I have seen it in a game shop in Xu Jia Hui and actually the price was 3800 (my mistake), a friend of mine back home bought it for 600€ Shocked (>6000 yuan)
It seems that sony didn't deliver enough PSPs, they could only produce 200k consoles for the launch and are not expecting to produce more until the beginning of january.
That's why the price's gone up, going from 150€(converting from yen) to 600€.
As for the price in Europe I have no idea, a friend of mine working in the industry told me that It would be around 250€ but He didn't say if it was for the 1st package (console only) or the value pack that includes some accessories.

well I do have an xbox live starter kit but can't use it, since you can't find any original games here.
Which makes me so desperate coz I wanted so badly to try Halo 2 on the xbox live with my friends back at home:(

if by any chance you know of a way to play on the xbox live with a copy let me know.......

this is what i was wondering. so the only reason i can't go online is because i don't have original games ? gotta get some then...the online experience should make it worth buying one or two real ones Smile how's the new halo anyways ?

well techinically yes but you also need a chip that can be deactivated (since through the xbox live MS detects if your console 's chiped and bans you automatically) and I don't think that you can find that here, they barely know much about xbox here not mentionning that they don't even know what the xbox live is.
You could always order a chip from a website and install it here
here are some useful web sites dealin with modchips

http://www.123consoles.com/default.php?cPath=33&language=En

http://www.ominfo.com/

here is one located in HK and that does a bit of everything (games included) with no shipping costs

www.lik-sang.com

I hope this helps

well, many people think it's one of the best FPSs ever made , but i'm not one of them there was nothing new about this game it's more a halo 1.5 than a true halo 2.
But then again it's a personal opinion

That basically means you need an original console with no chip and original games and then you could play...urrrgh....

it would be very bad idea to buy a PSP right now, since the battery life is simply crap. better wait until they bring a second generation out to get some improvement here.

Is same thing with Ipod, the last generation that's available can handle 4 hours of playtime more.

Its important to realise that the psp they bring out now, and the one in 6 months and/or a year will be internally different. Same thing with the xbox, the one can buy now is internally different from the first ones on sales. They improve and cost optmalize their products.

+ is first time sony brings out a handheld, so expect them to make some changes in the near future.

Or in other words, the psp that is available now is psp.1, better wait for version .2
