| Post subject: FTTB? Wha-dat? |
I recently moved apartments and was told I wouldn't be allowed to transfer my ADSL connection as my new place is connected via FTTB. Now what the hell is that? With my limited Mandarin, I realised it's something like a shared bandwidth?
The Telecom guys came over and set up the whole gig but we ran into a wall - we managed to get connected but I couldn't surf. I'm running on a Mac Powerbook. The icon in my menu bar indicated I was connected but that was it. Couldn't surf, check mail, nothing. Pages wouldn't even load.
I'm connected via PPoE, entered the username and password correctly. Anyone has any idea what I might've left out? Someone said something about "po hao". How would I do that? Am I supposed to obtain the IP address from management or leave it to automatic?
Help!! Thanks a bunch. |

If you Google FTTB you get the explanation that it means Fiber To The Basement.
What this more than likely means is that you have one fiber cable coming into the building and then splits into the different apartments. I know that this has been a problem in for example Australia where a normal ADSL modem would get the shits and not work. Since you are sharing bandwidth with the rest of the tenants it also means that you can never get any 'guaranteed' up/down speeds since you have no idea what the others are doing.
No idea how to fix it though...you could try to check with Manegement and see if they have any ideas. They will more than likely have had this question a few times so they should...I repeat should know. If you call the Telecom guys they will probably say that it is a fault on your end and that it doesn't concern them...
Good luck though... |

You should go back to CHina Telecom and ask them for a service call, tell them you have a Mac, and don't let them leave until you can surf. They have been somewhat responsive when we were living in Pudong, showing up within a day of calling in an issue....though the Mac thing could be a problem for them. |

Well, the clowns who came to set the line up stayed for about 20 mins, couldn't figure out how to work a Mac, simply packed up and said they were there only to set up the line and it wasn't their responsibility to make sure I could surf. Even had the cheek to comment that Macs were such troublesome machines. Idiots. You pretty much guessed that right, SC!
Anyway, called Telecom and they've arranged someone to come this weekend, and again mentioned that they might now know how to configure a Mac. Crap. |

You should treat it as a LAN connection, not a dialup. PPPoE isn't required. |

My building is also using FTTB.. It works out well but I am using XP.. automatic IP works for FTTB unless you have other computers in your LAN via hub.
Maybe you can google and see if u can find any info about Mac and FTTB.. |

Madibaman, can you log on msn when you can't get access to internet?
some broadband service in China doesn't work with Mac well. bitch the telecom company and ask them to fix the problem if you have the patience. I assume it's the dns problem. try to set up the IP address in router and set up (i guess wat you overhead was Bo Hao (dial up) instead of Po Hao in router also.
good luck. |
