Post subject: Kids shopping in Shanghai

The kids are busily organising their finances for our trip to Shanghai in January. What types of goods are cheap for kids to buy? Their interests include DVDs (music and movies), electronic games, trendy clothing, handbags, jewellery, perfume and makeup. We said we would give each child a spending allowance and that it was up to each child to add to this amount if they wish.

DVDs and CDs are really cheap but pirated. remember, US Customs have strict rules re: pirated DVDs/CDs. the clothes are cheap... just gotta go to the right places. there are thousans of botiques aroun the city. they usually have trendy, affordable clothes. most of the malls i've been to have really cool clothes but are really expensive. in general, electronics are more expensive in china with the exception of HongKong of course.
Make up.... good brands like clinique, Christian Dior and the like ARE REALLY EXPENSIVE. Red Earth on the other hand is an ok brand and have ok prices. i haven't checked local brands... don't even know if there are any. A GOOD RULE OF THUMB IS.... anything that's imported is expensive... local goods, on the other hand are affordable.

It really depends on how old your kids are. The younger they are the lower the expectations I guess. In general very cheap but nice clothing for any age should be no problem to find here. That applies to bags and accesories. There are local made Lo'Real & Mabeline if you don't mind trying. Other European brand names of cosmetics are very very expensive.
