I hate beggars to impose on a person's romantic date, impose a sense of uneasiness, in order to sponge some money.
I have vowed that next time that happens I'm going to toss it on the ground and make them pick it up. Make them demean themselves. |

I'll do the "faggy" thing again and offer a poem by Frost. I do this because of the two references I saw above to romantic moments ruined by beggars. I wish to pass no judgment. I don't give to beggars 80% of the time. I have no "heart in a case of gold/ And pinned with a silver pin". This is just to share my own conflict with you, with someone else's poem.
Love And A Question
Robert Frost
A stranger came to the door at eve,
And he spoke the bridegroom fair.
He bore a green-white stick in his hand,
And, for all burden, care.
He asked with the eyes more than the lips
For a shelter for the night,
And he turned and looked at the road afar
Without a window light.
The bridegroom came forth into the porch
With, 'Let us look at the sky,
And question what of the night to be,
Stranger, you and I.'
The woodbine leaves littered the yard,
The woodbine berries were blue,
Autumn, yes, winter was in the wind;
'Stranger, I wish I knew.'
Within, the bride in the dusk alone
Bent over the open fire,
Her face rose-red with the glowing coal
And the thought of the heart's desire.
The bridegroom looked at the weary road,
Yet saw but her within,
And wished her heart in a case of gold
And pinned with a silver pin.
The bridegroom thought it little to give
A dole of bread, a purse,
A heartfelt prayer for the poor of God,
Or for the rich a curse;
But whether or not a man was asked
To mar the love of two
By harboring woe in the bridal house,
The bridegroom wished he knew. |

I think disabled beggars are fine, but the ones that send their children after you make me sick... they're probably not even their own children... borrowed or something. And they're so damn sly those kids... what do they grow up to be? |

^ Posters on Shanghai expat
But the kids make me sick...Women lying around in streets in the nighttime with the kids in their arms, especially now that it is so cold. HORRIBLE...There was an article in Shanghai Daily about a family whose son disappeared. They believe to have seen him on a picture f beggin kids at the bund, taken by a tourist...
Really, don't give, as sad as it is, it will only encourage more people to do it... |

If they give you the 'feed my kid' routine just give them a condom. |

So your point is...tourists should take more pictures?
Why don't we start a thread where we can post beggar pics, titled: "IS THIS YOUR KID?" |

actually earlier this year i spent an evening with a friend walking around nanjing rd to "talk" to the beggars who were with kids.. also took some pictures.. every mom told me the same story - their husbands all owed debt and became violent.. the moms had to take their kids out and they had been shanghai for only 3 days (surprised that everyone said 3 days.. but a guy nearby told me they had been there for more than 3 months)..one of the little boys had his arm wounded.. it was pretty cold that evening but the mom didn't hesitate at all and took off the child's clothes in order to show us the wound.. i really don't think a real mom would do something like that though.. |
