Post subject: Arriving in two days

The family is really excited as we are due to arrive in Shanghai in two days time. I am starting to get a bit nervous about what to expect. How cold is the weather at the moment? Any special local events planned for January?

it's really really cold right now. there's snow on the ground and the wind is biting. It's not what I expected at all. Still, as long as you have good room heaters--which I do not--you'll be fine.

I don't know of any special events in January, but I do know that expats meet every Saturday at the Huihai Starbucks

It's not that cold. It's only -3 C...and yes, it's a bit windy...

Today is a beautiful winter day...cold,sunny...not too much pollution...

Welcome to Shanghai...

or sweden too, I suppose.

Actually it's not bad during the day with the sun. But in the evenings, in the freezing wind, waiting for a taxi.... brrr!!!!!

I lived in Pittsburgh many years- maybe my memories have changed but I don't remember it being this cold.

Cold or not cold depending on where your family comes from. Let's just get to the fact - weather report said it's going to be 2 to -5 tomorrow (Jan. 1). And, that's probably the lowest temp. Shanghai would get.

New year events? Plenty. As far as I know there are some great musical and dance performances in town. After arrival, you can try to get a copy of mangazines such as That's Shanghai, City Weekend, etc. (Available in almost all bars and restaurants targeting on the expats and tourists and 4 to 5 star hotels.) and you will get all the details.

Welcome to Shanghai!

Thanks for all the replies. I live in Australia, the land of the sunny Christmas. It is the middle of summer here and really hot. Air conditioning, ceiling fans, frozen drinks, backyard swimming pool, sweat, sweat and more sweat. The cold weather in Shanghai will certainly be noticed.

Dory

Is it really snowing in Shanghai? I did not think it snowed there. Not that I mean, the kids will love to see some snow.

Shanghai does snows in the winter. Not so much recently due to global warming and urbanization but given the condition it does can snow. However, I am not sure if you kids will get to see the remains of this one. It was from the 30th, you know. Although still can see some grey snow piling up at the roadside but almost all of them are gone unless it snows again. At least not in the center of the city.

If kids are fancy about snow, that's quite easy. Just go a bit north from Shanghai or just away from the city to the country sides chances to see snow will increase significantly.

Mathildagirl
you have probably arrived already!!! I have not been on this site for 10 days çause I was moving.
But I can tell you it was snowing and then it got to minus something. We are used to this in Europe but we have proper heating (not like fan heating here)
I just moved in last week with my three kids and we decided to stay in the hotel for 5 days until our belongings (and jumpers ) were un packed. I wish you good luck house and school hunting.

doryphorus99 - We had excellent central heating, a bit too hot at times. Missed the Starbucks gathering. Sounds like it would have been fun.

Everyone - it was freezing. Fun rugging up in all our winter gear but freezing. No snow, although it was forecast.

Hi MatildaGirl - Welcome to Shanghai! I am glad for you for having found a place with good central heating. Without that, Shanghai is like a big frig in the winter.

I don't believe anyone answered your question as yet about anything being on. I have found there is nothing anytime of year as far as I know. In fact, this place has nothing on as far as I know, unless your're into nightlife in a big way. ie. bars, restaurants. In the event that something is put on by the authorities, nothing will be free. Expect to pay for everything and join the uncivilised crowds and hope your kids don't get knocked to the ground. That pretty much sums this place up. You could always get into the DVDs, shopping and eating like the Chinese do.

Expect a lot of grey outdoors. Try to get your apartment painted with bright colours, bright decor and bright lights, otherwise you will forget what colour is and slip into depression or hit the bars and get wiped out on a regular basis like many expats do here, when they are not working that is.

One last piece of bad news: there is nowhere to escape to outside the city within driving distance unless you are prepared to drive for 4 hours one way. You may hear of Hangzhou but it is overrated and crowded. Flying out is the best option, possibly to Thailand. But not on China Eastern! They are cheap. But don't do it!!!! I warn you!!!!!

Good luck!

Very Happy Hi MatildaGirl,
Welcome to devers Shanghai. As you can see some people hate it here but most people like to be here. Of course you can get depressed by many things or in many ways but couldn't you in you home country?
So think possitive and enjoy. Allthough it sometime seems your in a rollercaoster, rollercaosters can be fun too.
Take advantage of this upportunaty! You have to live where your home is.
Have fun! See ya, Evie
