City Supermarket has good parmesan although a little pricey. You are on Hong Xiao rd? Not Hong Qiao? Anyway, there is a city on hong mei lu nr yanan lu and a few more around town, a couple on Huaihai and one on nanjing. let me know if you need more specific directions.

Even if they both carry parmesan cheese??? I usually buy the Millel brand - either in a block or shredded. City Supermarket will have it too and Metro. |

^I've never seen millel in a block, but the shredded stuff is not good - get the proper stuff!
Bursa - easy mistake to make. If you walk down hong mei lu from yanan lu about 5 minutes, city supermarket is on your right. They have lots of other imported goodies too! Where do you come from? |

^ Well if you haven't been to city supermarket then you should go, you will probably find a lot of familiar products there. It is a little more expensive, but it often has a lot of things you just can't find anywhere else.
Happy shopping!! |

Hi there,
Good luck for your Parmesan resarch...
Where did you live in Tunisia??? I'm from there!
I've relocated to Shanghai early december, from Singapore, and before that, I used to live in Belgium...
Welcome to Shanghai, I'm sure you and your family will like it, it's great! |

So what is it? I'm not talking about the grated kind in a can but the shredded kind in a bag. To me it tastes just like grating the block of cheese - same Millel brand - or is there another kind at City Supermarket? |

^You can get real parmesan cheese from the counter wrapped in cellophane. I think parmesan has to be freshly grated that's why I don't like the shredded stuff in a bag. |

For cheese there is only one choice in town: Cheese & Fizz.
The owner whom I know well, gets his cheese from Bernard Anthony, the top 'affineur' in France (affineur is the person who matures cheese before reselling) who also supplies a lot of Michelin 3 star restaurants like Alain Ducasse in Paris. Can you believe it, the best european cheeses in Shanghai? Try their aged 'Conté' it's unbelievable. And yes they have Parmesan, the real one Parmegiano Regiano, all 40 lbs if you like.
City supermarket is to Cheese & Fizz what a Chevrolet Nova is to a BMW M3, why settle for less when you can have the best unless you are a PLA soldier on a 200 RMBs paycheck? |

Sounds so snobbish. Not just the fromage but especially the reference to the poor PLA chaps who will defend you when those Taiwanese renegades bomb Shanghai. Where is this Cheeze & Fizz located? |

Cheese and Fizz is on the West part of Xintiandi. Right hand side of Starbucks. |

Velveeta is what makes the US Army go forward. |

I realize you are joking, but we shouldn't forget that:
1 - The reality is that China, not Taiwan, is the side constantly threatening to use military force to resolve the 'problem'.
2 - Taiwan has no missiles targetting China, while China has hundreds of missiles targetting military and civilian targets in Taiwan.
Thus I don't think Shanghai expats need to be very worried about 'Taiwanese renegades'. Residents of Taiwan on the other hand have every reason to be concerned about the PLA.
But I agree the comment on PLA soldiers and their salaries was snobbish and unnecessary, so good on you for saying something. . .
back to cheese! |
