| Post subject: how do i get there? |
Hi,
I'm a self employed business / it consultant who is looking to relocate to Shanghai for 6mo+ .. I currently live in San Diego and I'm just looking for a change in scenery and I think living in Shanghai would be a great experience.. I have a couple questions regarding how I would proceed:
1) what type of visa would i come in on?
2) what about taxes, etc?
3) because I'm self employed, would I sponsor myself??
4) do you know anyone who has done this sucessfully?
and..
5) once I get to Shanghai is their internet infrastructure set up where I could get a unrestricted, broadband connection to the internet?
Thanks for any and all help!
Cheers,
-K |

1. Probably a business visa, but you need a sponsor -- easy to getr through Hong Kong visa agencies.
2. You'll be required to pay Chinese income tax on income earned here. US tax applies to anything over $75K/year.
3. Not possible.
4. Sure -- Hong Kong visa agencies are the best bet, as far as I know.
6. Unless you work for an emabssy or major foreign compani with their own server, etc., it's not possible to get an unrestricted Internet connection,. Every ISP goes through Chinese phone companies, which are all govt. run. Connections are fast and broadband is cheap and plentiful. |
