Post subject: Southern Thailand. Anyone been lately?

Got hammered last night and made the mistake of checking/answering emails before passing out. Woke up this morning with a confirmation and receipt for a ticket to BKK from 2/4-2/13. Im not unhappy with it. Just a bit surprised.
My plan is to roll without any firm plans or arrangements. Just me and my backpack and a return ticket to PVG.
And then make my way down to Ko Lanta or Railay. Read some threads on LP that they were both cleaned up, empty, and in dire need of tourist dollars. Im coming to the rescue.
Anyone have any ideas on the best way to get down there? Bus? Flight. Im coming into to BKK at 2AM so I assume I wont be able to make a connection at that hour correct? Adivice on where to stay (maybe near the airport or bus station so I can get down there early). Any adivce on those two spots?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

^If you stay on Khao San Road or nearby, it will be easy enough to arrange transport down to Ko Lanta or Railey. The bus will take all night or you can fly down to Krabi and then go to whatever beach from there easily enough. There are lots and lots of travel agents on and around Khao San ready to help you with your onward travel. My advice would be not to stay on khao san itself but nearby on Rambuttri or Phra Ahtit. If you need more detailed advice on where to go or stay PM with your price range and I can give you more info.
