Post subject: A World without Thieves

A World without Thieves

Anybody seen this movie? I borrowed the DVD from a colleague and watched the movie last night at home. It was good but not exactly the best thing since sliced bread.

My favorite scenes were 1) the egg peeling competition and 2) shouting at the security guard for being a waste of space and only saluting the nice cars.

Draw-backs: 1) The subtitles were white on a sometimes white background which makes them impossible to read (I can't understand enough madarin yet to watch a movie).
and 2) the plot seemed a little too contrived to even let your imagination believe in the goings-ons

All and all I give it a (B-) on the (A) to (F) scale. What do you expats think? How about the native Shanghai posters, what do you think about this movie and what does it say about chinese culture? This is the first mainland chinese movie I've ever seen so I don't know if its ground-breaking or just another one off the production line.

Just curious.

The reason I asked your opinion is because alot of the chinese think the movie is great, but I thought it was luke warm.

Did I miss something that made it great. Or am I right, the movie sucks, and its just that the locals have poor taste in cinema.

No, 71% of the movies I've seen are not worse than "A world without Thieves" but 71% of the movies ever made are worse than "A world..

Now did you see the movie?, and if so what did you think?

You cannot really judge taste like that man... like we say in French: "Tous les gouts sont dans la nature" (All tastes exist in nature). Too many different types of movies out there to say what is good or bad. Taste is too personnal...

I liked the story of this film cause it had several meaningful messages. And it was quite entertaining. It's not the best movie, or even the best Chinese movie out there, but it was well above average. To me.

merdy, tu as raison, et j'agrée votre opinion. And I like the pure rustic man, ShaGen, he brought the true sentiment even to the thief. When I saw the film, I was laughing and crying, moved by the lovely person and story.

p.s. t¡bet is so beautiful also...my favourite scene I wanna go to...Smile

The movie is actually adapted from a novel by Chinese author Zhao Benfu. Never read it, but I think it's probably more moving than the movie. The movie is quite entertaining, but it's just another commercialized piece of work by the director Feng Xiaogang.

Like which messages?
Anyway, a story could be good and the movie itself pretty bad. Surely, tastes can be different, still, poor acting or directing is poor acting or directing.

Finally saw the movie last week. It was not as bad as some have made it out to be, but one has to like CHinese-styled movies to appreciate some of the directions the story was going. While it seems a bit contrived, the overall story is decent and some of the scenes were very moving. I think I'd give it a little better rating since I found it entertaining. Maybe a "B-B+"

Um, BTW how did a B- grade get a 71%? Back in school, a B- would have been around 80% (100-90 = A, 89-80 = B, 79-70 = C, etc...)
