Post subject: The potential for some food places in Shanghai

I'm back home in Singapore for the new year, and I'm blown away by some new places that have opened up. I wonder if there will ever be a point of time in Shanghai when we will have such places. Here are 2 places I have visited that really made me wish we have in Shanghai:

1) an organic food store that specialises in organic food products as well as a dine-in restaurant. It will cater to the health conscious as well as those who feel that they need to detox (a potentially great need given Shanghai's environment)

2) an italian cafe that has a fabulous selection of real italian desserts, wine, paninis, appetisers...etc. I swear to its authenticity, having spent a month in Italy before. Also, the decor was tasteful, and reminiscent of many places in Manhattan. Charming service and very reasonably prices despite its authenticity.

Just places that you can relax in, read your book, and let the afternoon slip by.

I'm sick of the usual few western spots for cafe, bistro fare. They are ok, but not great. And they can get away with it due to the lack of competition. I wish someone will open a cafe bistro that will just blow us all away and give them a run for their buck. And it should be a place that is REAL, cosy, and warm. Not the usual minimalist, stylised, sterile crap that is becoming too much of a bore. We need a place with CHARACTER!

The one at Cityhall Raffles City (beside Delifrance). I know it's opened by the same owner of Garibaldi or that it's called Garibaldi.

Would love one of those cosy, nook-like, hole-in-the-wall, overstuffed, odd-thing-filled cafe with happy servers and quality food.

There must be one in Shanghai!

And sort of on-topic...there is a little cafe relatively close to the Dong Jia Du fabric market that I'm hoping to find again. Drove by it in a taxi one time. Unfortunately, wasn't paying the slightest bit of attention to where we were until that point! It's a narrow cafe, two stories, a table or two outside (believe they could've been wrought-iron), flowerboxes on the second floor. It has a French/Quebecois look to it - so much that it shocked me. Had a chalk sign outside advertising the daily specials, all of which were French-influenced Western fare. I'm sure I saw cheesecake in the cool-counter.

Anybody have any idea where this is, or what it's called?

there are many of those open air food courts in singapore. We call them 'hawker centres'. I believe you are referring to either Newton Hawker Centre or Lau Pa Sat (which is in the CBD area). It's ironic how I actually get more value for money for cheap food in expensive Singapore than in Shanghai. And it is a great thing how the food stalls are all graded by the ministry of health so that you actually can get an idea what the cleanliness standards are like at each food stall.

Caesara: I know what you are talking about. I've always dreamt about starting my own little place one day when I'm done with the corporate world.

I went to the creperie beside Cafe Montmarte the other day and it was pretty cute. I had a nutella banana crepe. They even have apple cider! It would have been even nicer if they serve the cider in earthen bowls.

it shouldn't be lau pa sat. lau pa sat is not popular for laksa... rite? more popular for its satay stall, one whole lane of satay stalls.

When you go to the organic market what do you want that you can't find in Shanghai?

I'm doing a study on the organic market in China.

Izanami... not sure if this counts (or even if it is what you are asking)... but there is a Farmer's Market at the Portman once or twice a month... not sure how organic the goods are, but the selection has been pretty good on the times I have been.

(PS... I am still thrilled about what you told me is happening on April 28th.... can't wait!!!!)

I think they preferred to be referred to as a perfumery.
Great news indeed! Where exactly?
Go LVMH!

Think Izanami said it was going to be at Sinan road and hmmm... was it Huai Hai road?

Please don't tell me they are going to put most of the emphasis on perfumes here! In the US, the shops carry loads of perfumes, but also skin care, hair care and color cosmetics. The selection of lines is impressive! Benefit, Philosophy, Tony&Tina, Hard Candy... the list goes on and on!

sorry for the thread hijacking...

Talking about perfumes and cosmetics cannot really be hijacking, can it? Rolling Eyes

What kind of brands is that? US-only?

Most are maketing throughout the world, including Asia, but up until now, not China.

I hope Sephora changes this!!!!

Of course, they have loads and loads of other brands... including their own, which I have never used.

I just discovered banana republic and GAP and the Shanghai First Department store. I was pretty shocked. I didn't know they sell it here. I'm not a fan of American fashion brands, but it was just kind of comforting seeing it, despite the mini selection. sigh.

Yes, huai hai road and si nan road. Near Benetton/Sisley (another of my favourite brand).

You will not miss it. The trade mark black and white stripes practically scream at you. I kinda yelped when I saw it and grabbed onto my poor friend in excitement. OK. enough of bimbo talk. hehe

I like Bimbo talk!!!

Laughing

But, like you, I can't stand Banana Republic or the Gap... respect the marketing, but that's about it...

Hi Izanami. The creperie sounds interesting! Where is it, and what is it called? How do I get there? Thanks!

The creperie is on Xiang Yang Road, in between Huai Hai Road and Nanchang Road. Backs up to Xiang Yang Market. Owned by Cafe Montmatre and is located a few doors down. They have limited seating, but fortunately, all crepes are available at Cafe Montmatre also in case they are full when you arrive.

Not sure how to tell you how to get there because I don't know from where you are coming, but if you just go to Xiang Yang Market and walk south on Xiang Yang Road (away from Huai Hai road), you are bound to find it! Can't miss it... has signs and a menu is usually out front on a signboard.

Enjoy!

Sorry... know that you were asking Izanami, but I figured I would jump in because I wasn't doing anything else...

gosh!, give Rendezvous Cafe a try... one location in Xu Jia Hui, behind Metro City (the large pink/salmon colored building with the glass ball) and one on Nanjing Road, just west of Tong Road. Great burgers!
