Post subject: Medical Check up for Pinghe School

Hi, I am thinking of enrolling my child in Pinghe Bilingual School. The school office tells me that my child needs to go for a medical check up at the hospital first: blood tests (including liver function and Hepatitis B carrier status etc), urine and stool tests, Xray and an ECG. Sounds scary. Does anyone have a child enrolled in that school, and did your child have to go through all that? Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

I must say that it's highly unusual that you have to put your child through these kind of tests to enroll in a school. Sounds like some scam to make some extra money to me, and besides it's extremely arrogant. My kid goes to YCIS in Pudong and never had to go through any tests like that. I would have refused that anyway. Neither did I ever heeard of this practice.
Just my 2 cents.

Could it be related to the Meningitis C outbreak? How long have they had this policy intact? I agree that it seems extreme...

Seems they have had this policy for some time. I asked the principal, and was told that it was because most of their students board at school, so they need to make sure they are in good health and are not carriers of communicable diseases (Hepatitis B is endemic here).
Moreover, vaccinations for chicken pox, hepatitis B and flu are compulsory. Kids who haven't had it are supposed to go get it done by the first week of school.
Saw some other parents at the office yesterday when I went to clarify: from Korea and Canada. They all had their test results ready! Guess I should be getting mine done then.

I would forget about this school and try somewhere else.

PS. The list of tests can be done anywhere, as long as it's a district hospital and above (as opposed to a small dinky clinic I suppose). So I guess we have go look for the nearest one with an expat section tomorrow.

FYI: my child went to Ping He a year ago (for 1 semester only). When I enrolled him, I only showed them the medical records from USA(the yellow card). and did not go through any of those, I didn't hear any of the moms in the class mentioned or complained about lengthy and extensive med exams. However, we were in the commuter class.

When my children enrolled in SMIC Private School last year, my son who goes to the kindy was requested to do a body check. As I'm working I had no time and the Kindergarten never followed up anyway.

FYI Hep B is passed on by bodily fluid and blood, same as HIV. Don't see why little kids need to worry about that. Hep A is highly commutable via contaminated food and human waste.

Thanks for all your input. Had all the tests done at Dongfang (East China) Hospital. All except the poo and wee (I always forget to collect and kid goes to the loo without telling me!).
But it seems that's not too important, 'cause the office seemed satisfied with the rest. They told me to take my time with the last 2 tests.
