Ha, and I think that's why I'm so poor at singing Chinese songs, crappy lyrics and crappy tones made all those crappy singers.

All pop music is shite. However, all chinese music of the last 25 years is shite. Apart from Andy Liu did a couple of good ones.
It is because they
1. try to copy the west rather than inventing a style, and copy it badly.
2. They have nothing interesting to sing about, and I have heard people recommend chinese 'rock' bands, which is ridiculous as they could also never sing rebelliously, and their music is utter shite.
3. chinese girls are happy listening to 10,000 songs which contain the lyrcis "wo ai ni", in any variation.
3. b) this is because they have the social education of a small piece of bread, and know nothing about the realworld apart from what they see on state-censored tv.

D, in fact I seldom listern to those Chinese POP songs. Having found them so much alike and 90% of them are related to "wo ai ni" stuff like Nicky said, so no interest arises. And besides, it seems that only the film star owns a pretty face then he/she could start an album here..like Zhao wei, Lu yi, Chen hao, Zhou xun.. That really makes me sick.

But..hey...but...recently I think F.I.R. is quite good! Smile

it's the worst crap I've ever heard and the style of it hasn't changed at all. Listen to a pop song from 1995 and it sounds the same as one on the charts today. The lyrics are always the same shiit: "I love you, you love me, why don't you love me? why did you leave me?"

who is F.I.R. Teddi??? sorry I am getting OLD ... Embarassed

Yeah agreed - music is a highly abstracted expression of our inner world. It is all about emotions, spirits. The culture here didnot and to some extent still doesnot encourage full and free letout and expression of our emotions, as, at some point, it does no good to the social harmony.

Traditional Chinese music ... actually it had nothing "popular" as originally most of them were for royals and their families' amusement and entertainment, same as western/european classicals. composers and performers were well educated on compose and performance so most of these music are truly beautiful but can be anything BUT popular. I see the reasons as:

1. Chinese ancient instruments are mainly stringed with much more strings than guitar violin Razz thus people have to receive professional education to play it well, somewhat like japanese geisha.

2. ancient Chinese music adopted a much more complicated system to compose than the Staff (? not sure about the word), which certainly restrained its getting popular.

3. there were music performance groups that one could hire but it was nothing that a normal farmer or businessman could afford. Most people could only enjoy it during those festival celebration or special occations as those landowners may hire the group to do some public performance for his villiens and servants.

However, people always find their own way to entertain themselves, there for sure were folk musics. But unlike the west world that had renainssance, industrial revolution after the medieval depression, Chinese were never encouraged to letout too much emotions or fully express ourselves, which contribute partly to the concept of "humbleness". Apparently it's good for the maintanance of "social harmony", which the whole Chinese culture and system, ancient or modern, has been revolving with and has been extremely highly valued. Let s see what we have been having here - first the feudalism, then westerners' break-in, wars, Chinese socialism and the culture revolution ... depression depression depression all the time ... we simply haven't had time and chances to open-up and catch up. Sad but true. So what else we can expect on Chinese music except for being like at its infant, and the only thing it can do about music is to take in take in take in.

However, I dont think we can expect some GOOD rock & roll stuff like the west simply because the lack of the "rebellion" thing - we are just not good at that.

But try to listen to those modern performance of Chinese anciet music, and go to t¡bet or Yunnan or Guangxi for those real Chinese unplug folk music, you will be amazed and maybe will find the charm of Chinese music.

MMM,why is your head so shite?
have you ever thought about it is just because your brain is full of crap so you cant appreicate chinese pop songs.

sorry,my little grandfather, being rude here Cool

i do like some chinese pop song singers such as faye wong,qi qin, jacky zhang, cai qin, david tao and jeff zhang (the first album i bought in primary school was his).............so what?

hmmm, who can help me to find some"wo ai ni" "ni ai wo" in faye's recent 5 years works???

i believe that lyrics is a very impotant part of songs. when i was young and my english level was very, very low,it's impossible for me to understand most lyric of english songs so i only listened to the chinese pop songs. some of them truly moved and impressed me so much cause their special or marvellous lyrics.for many times, when i relisten to them, some unforgettble memory occurs to me and tears as well.
i am willing to try different style songs as long as they are fair-sounding or emotional. you cant tell which song is crap ,which song is top-class cause there is not a "only" standard to judge...

hahaha nilly

Hey but music has changed over the past few years, especially Chinese music so its not right to say its sheit. Especially Taiwanese music is great. Nilly has mentioned some like Wong Faye, Jacky Cheung, David Tao, Jay Chou, Elva Sium, a group like Tension, all great musicians. The content of their music is not only about love (you cant blame people for writing songs about their feelings right).

And Im not talking about traditional Chinese music but it doesnt matter if people like it, we all have different taste.

China had a great band that put on incredible live shows but the singer died a long time ago. Their name was BEYOND.
Taiwan's Wu Bai also kicks ass!

D, it's called fei er yue tuan in Chinese and the group consists of two guys who play as a keyboardist and a guitarist and a coryphaeus girl whose name is also Faye. They are all from TW.

Thanks to the composer, the songs are quite impressed.
