Last time at the fake market (Sience & technologie museum) I payed :
Polo : 85RMB
Tie 12 RMB
Laptop trolley (small in height, big in width): 280 (didn't buy it, got it down to 280)
I believe I payed the polo's too much?
What's the regular price of a trolley? |

It depends on the polo itself, the fake Paul Smith (with the color stripped collars) is slightly more expensive. Got them for 35 kuais, the usual ones (fake or not), around 30 kuais.
Be careful though, some of them are real bad quality and can be itchy ... |

I went to this market today, didn't buy anything but wanted to test the waters for a shopping trip next weekend. These are the quotes and lowest prices I got:
Smallest buddha (ceramic): 35
Medium-sized Buddha: 50
Thomas the Tank Engine Winter Coat: 280 (however on label was GBP29.90)
Shanghai t-shirts: 80
Timberland gloves and hats: 30 each.
What do you think?
Also, do you think it's better if you speak Chinese because then they know you might live here, therefore go back?
Thanks. |

Speak Chinese if you can, do not tell the sellers where you come from, or they will tell you the price in your currency, which is a bit disturbing ("naaah, I'm not going to negotiate for one frickin' euro" , why not ! This is no euros, these are 10 RMB, you could have dinner for this price).
The T-shirts are very expensive, I buy them around 25-35 kuais. If by Shanghai T-shirts, you mean a "I love SH" T-shirt, you can buy it for less, I bought a "I love 北京" for 10 kuais ...
And, important thing, shout the prices, they don't want everybody around to know you're buying something for cheap ... It works fine when there are a lot of tourists around, which are ready to buy without negotiating or who have no idea of prices (in Nanjing Xi Lu for instance) |

There are many markets worth visiting but the best one, especially for a Newbie is the market located at the Shanghai Science & Technology museum. It is located on the line 2 subway in Pudong and is easily accessible. This is currently the largest market and they over expanded way too rapidly so great bargains can be had. The vendors are quite hungry for business, especially on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when they need cash to pay their bills. On weekends they have more customers, are flush with cash and it is much harder to get a good bargain unless the individual vendor knows you.
The market has a Tailor section for clothes, a Jewelry section and another 4 areas with general merchandise. I think total is just under 2000 stalls now. If you are looking for a specific item, more specialized markets may have a slightly better selection and even slightly lower prices, but for the best overall shopping experience S & T is the way to go. |

^Tanna, bought Shanghai/China tees from Yu yuan garden years ago, at a reasonable price, but seems that most sellers aren't interested in lowering their prices. Not sure if the tees are still available at Yu yuan, perhaps someone else on this forum has been there recently? |

I am also planning to buy some stuff over the weekend (should I go during the week instead? for an easier bargaining?)
anyway here are the items and target prices.
Belt : 15rmb
Tie (fake name brands about 2 to 3) : 15rmb each
Converse Shoe : 50 rmb ( this I have no idea)
Small backpack for camera while bicycling: 50rmb
Northface jacket (thin) : 80 rmb
Cargo Pants : 40 rmb
Polo shirts (2) : 35rmb each
Watch , Seiko Sportura : 80 rmb (if its good looking I guess)
Do these prices sound good? I am iffy about the watch since I dont really need it and I have doubts about quality.
thanks |

Although you can negotiate lower prices on Thursday best day, Wednesday second best, Tuesday third best the prices you list above you should be able to get no problem even on the weekends. During the tough week days you could save an additional 15%-20% off of those prices. |

Great forum, great thread. Hi!
Okey, this is my contribution, I´ll see what I remember for sure.
Pretty much the same prices from S&T and Nanjing 580. (Most bought at Nanjing 580)
Our strategy has been going at opening hours Tuesday to Thursday.
Polo ralph lauren T-shirt= 30 rmb (always )
Same for Gant or Paul Smith= 30 rmb
Silk tie: Max 10 rmb, bought more than 5 =8 rmb each
Polo Ralph Lauren long sleeve cotton sweater= 60rmb
Gant long sleeve cotton sweater, pattern "hairplait", in lack of the right
word? = 75-80 rmb
Paul Smith sweater with stripes = 80 rmb (felt a little to much)
Samsonite hard bag/case (biggest model), good quality = 220rmb (nanjing 580, used it for months, travel alot)
Mont Blanc leather shoulder bag= 130 rmb (Use for work alot, got papers and my computer 13,3", Nanjing 580)
Hugo Boss leather folder = 100rmb , (Precisely room for my computer, 13,3")
Ralph lauren stocking= 5 rmb (bought like 10 pairs)
Calvin klein underwear = 10 rmb
Gucci Shoes for tuxedo "wax" = 300 rmb
Shoes Brown "leather" loafers= 200rmb, used these alot and great quality. (Nanjing 580, 2nd floor I believe. On a corner. Got some different shoes than everyone else like the Gucci tuxedo wax shoes (in glass).)
Leather Wally belt= 60 rmb
Leather belt brown = 40rmb , used over 100 days, great quality (S&T)
The trick was 10% =60rmb, I played uncertain about the quality. She agreed and then I changed, "Don´t like the quality, no good leather" then she agreed to 40rmb
Cuff links, different brands same price = 20rmb 2for35rmb
Mont Blanc fountain Pen = 60 rmb (to much i think)
I will continue with fabric market and tailoring in the next post.
So, where to buy good quality watches? Prices? Do anyone have any contact, please post or PM me.
I haven´t dared to buy any since it feels all watches at (S&T, Nanjing 580) are worthless? I know nothing about this and would be thrilled if anyone got any info.

I am not sure what you mean by worthless or good quality replica watches. The electric watches with a PVD finish that will last 12-15+ years at S&T should run you rmb 60-70 for the Cartier, Patek Philippe, Vacheron, Blancpain, Longines, Boucheron, and other such top name replicas. The batteries go bad in about 3 years and need to be replaced. Sometimes these watches have been sitting around for a while in a suitcase in the markets and the batteries die in just a few days or months but all it takes is a new battery and they are good to go again for 3 years.
In general, unless you know the vendor well or it is a watch they want to dump, prices at S&T can be bargained much lower on watches than on the identical watch at 580 NanjingXi Lu.
The mechanical wind watches such as the Rolex watches are available in various features, quality levels for the works and finishes which all affect the final price so you need to be more knowledgeable to get a good value in those watches in any market. |

I am looking to buy a ready made fake blazer/sport jacket of decent quality. I haven't seen any around anywhere - do they even sell these here? I see that tailor made suits go for about RMB 500 - so if available, a blazer should be much less I presume ... RMB 200-300 for one perhaps?
I have to go to the museum of sci/tech on Wednesday so that's convenient - but is there another place that's better in Shanghai? ... or should I wait until I go to HK in a couple of weeks?
(btw - I scanned through this thread and found no recent mention of blazers/sport jackets) |

Hi there,
i probably should have read all this before i went out to buy some random stuff.. i am feeling quite stupid now xD
i just want to inquire for how much a fake gucci wallet (supposedly real leather and a+ quality) and 4 dvd's should approximately go! (in total)
i payed 200 (from 450) and felt like getting a good price.. after reading all your posts though i am sure i could have gotten it for at least 120.
i also want to add that i am completely new to the shanghai scene (and shanghai itself) and this was my first trip to such a back door vendor ever.. therefor my poor bargaining skills |

Don't feel stupid. We have all gone through this same process. The bottom line 98% of the time is if you bought the item, chances are you paid more than someone else with better bargaining skills or more time on their hands to bargain harder than you did. If you are happy with your purchase and what you paid for it when you the willing buyer and the willing seller agreed on a price enjoy your purchase and don't worry what someone else could have paid for it. Someone will always be better looking, smarter and wealthier than you and worrying about such trivialities will just add misery to your daily life.
Welcome to Shanghai. Live well, eat well, play well and enjoy your stay. |

[quote="miss-tsips"]OK - i am very intrested in this too!! Im currently in the market for a watch as well and would really appreciate if someone shared this iwth me as well!!! Please?!
@miss tsips
Ok, I found sth... the customers there I met said their buying since 5 years and the shop has all quality levels (5) including the watches you can walk in the real store in. Barging impossible, has connections to a bag (with certificate) shop in an apartment upstairs. Takes you there if you want.
Go in the morning or evening and the owner gives u a lessen in how to make differences in fakes, also opens the watches for you if requested.
Adrs: Nanjing Xi Lu Market, Ground Floor, pass the elevator on the left side, first store on the right (opposite a cosmetic shop), ask for the good stuff and they take you to another store hidden behind perls.
Happy shopping!!! |
