| Post subject: FAKE MARKET |
Hello,
I would like to start this new topic for people who live here and who are tired of being made fools of when shopping at the fake market. Through that thread I would like people to state the price they managed to get their purchases at. Then you can say if we paid too much and state your own prices for other items.
I start:
Bought better quality than average black socks with a stupid small logo on them 5 RMB each, when purchased 10 pairs.

Last watch I bought, an automatic, looks pretty good, I paid 150rmb. When someone offered me the same watch later, I bargained again, although I really didn't want the watch, but just to see how low they go. I got the guy down to 100rmb, then I got sick of bargaining feeling screwed enough already over the 1st watch...

- I bought my Puma's for 75 RMB six months ago...still going.
- Sunglasses for about RMB 20 (after intense bargaining). But the question is: do they have UV protection? I never bought the ones I bargained down to RMB 20.
- No watch should cost more than RMB 200 in my opinion. Bought 5 triple A class mens' watches for RMB 550 a few weeks ago.
- The men's shirts never exceed RMB 40 (long sleeves). I made one of the vendors cry and got it for RMB 35, but RMB 40 would take 2 minutes. And don't take their "but this one is 100% cotton / good quality" statements too seriously.
- Levi's Belt: RMB 25.
- Socks: the more you buy the better. At 10 pairs you should not pay much more than RMB 30. I bought 3 pairs for 12 of the "high quality" ones.
- CK boxers: RMB 12 each.
- Nike "dri-fit" long sleeve, short sleeve and no sleeve for RMB 25 each.
- Adidas warm-ups (top and bottom) for RMB 95.
- Adidas and Nike white socks: RMB 6 each.
I think the price you pay directly depends on how hard you are willing to bargain. It would be nice to hear about your bargaining strategies.
The ultimate goal, like in any price negotiation, is to find their breaking point (the lowest price they would not refuse). I usually start by laughing at their original price and start to leave. They pull me back and I offer them 10% of what they initially offered. They say I am joking. I say they are joking. The first price cuts on their part are pretty huge of course. From your side, you should not increase your offer by too much because you will reach their comfort zone and they will accept. If they accept too quickly, it's usually a bad sign. By visiting the market often you get a feel for what items should sell for. Then it's a question of finding the right vendor to negotiate with. Don't be afraid to look around and compare. I never go to the market when I am in a rush. |

Wow merdy! Really good!
My tactic is almost the same, but I do not state an own price until they got down to half. Then I start with half of this. But I should go lower I see
Samsonite Rucksack for a Laptop 100 (this should go for not more than 80)
NorthFace Windstopper Jacket (no fleece) 110
Samsonite Trolley in the high quality version (many bags, terrific quality) for 200, this may be not too bad, since other vendors refused to sell me another one for this as I showed it to them.
Does anyone has experience with the leather ware (bags etc)? |

I bought a nice 3m square embroided linen fabric for RMB100
Check your bags before you leave though... They had “by accident” given me the 2m one instead...
Playstation games RMB10 (not always the best quality!) |

Great idea baudbaud,
bought today:
Nike jogging trousers: 45 RMB
long arm Nike sweater for jogging: 45 RMB (two different vendors)
Levi's jeans 215 RMB (initial offer by vendor 480 RMB)
My "strategy" is just saying their price is crazy; usually pretending to want to leave is the best argument, just repeat your offer, don't change it... They even bargain for 5 Yuan, the jeans-compromise was 210 (me) 220 (vendor), 210 (me), 215 (vendor), accept.
good luck to everybody! |

I have to admit I am pretty proud of that one
However I buy my black jeans 100 RMB and I am sure you can go lower but at some point I am lazy.
My point is: if you are in a good mood bargain if not check this list first

Hi Baud,
you are right, 100 RMB is a lot better. So accepting 215, this strange feeling of mine wasn't that wrong after all...
I need to do better next time. Again, I think it is a good idea to see what other people pay |

Sunglasses go indeed for 15-20.
But I would be extremely dubious and cautious with this kind of things. This is not something you want to take risks with.

Purely price shoping without considering quality is not a good idea.
You can buy sunglasses from the factory for less than 3RMB/piece. That level of quality at 15RMB/piece in Xiangyang might me a worse deal than another pair at 50 or even 100 RMB. |

Pashmina - 30RMB
"Tiffany" Rings depending on kind, 60RMB tops
Beaded bag (clutch type) - 60RMB
Wallets - 25RMB
Also a good question to ask is "how much are you willing to pay for an item"...if they give you a price, say 350 and you're only prepared to pay 120, tell them...and and if they dont' give it, walk away..if it's still a profitable price, they'll run after you..if it's way below their capital, then, go find another stall...Try to go 1/3 of the asking price..that's a good place to start... |

Armani jacket (extra warm with a kind of fake fur lining inside) for 200RMB (she was willing to give me about 150 for a thiner one though)
Levi's blue jeans for 160RMB (could do much better here as well, I see) |

Bought a pair of Lee jeans for 60 kuai, still good a year on.
Tshirts I've had for 25, but I had to buy 3.
Feign disinterest, point out flaws in the product, walk away, shop around bargaining hard at a few places to get a good idea of the 'real' price.
Have fun! |

for some items 1/3 is too conservative...I think it's safer to start at 10 to 20% of the asking price and make your way up, but not by big leaps.
ben...I agree with you about the sunglasses. I have tried many models i really liked but I don't wanna risk my sight on cheap sunglasses. |

wow Caesara, you got pashmina for 10RMB??? You're very very good! I thought I was good when I got it for 30RMB. Anyway, good tips But where exactly do you find the manicure? I've never seen them...Are they any good?
Gucci/Ferragamo keyrings - 10 RMB (good quality)
French manicure - meaning you get white tips...you get white tip on the eerr, well, tip of your nail and the rest is in a pinkish beigy neutral shade. It's a two-tone color. Most salons will charge extra for this because it's harder to do. Regular means - 1 color only. |
