Post subject: Tired of bad hair days!

Looking for a reasonably priced english speaking hairdresser with experience in cutting foreigners' hair. I'm tired of going through the hack and grow process. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

I like Anna at Eric's, 4 Hengshan Rd. Haircut is around 300 RMB though.

Quite pricy, but very good - Eric Paris on 衡山路 (french hairdressers), female haircut for middle-length hair - (including shampooing and conditioning) is round 300rmb. It's worth it though, you won't end up in tears waiting for your hair to grow back asap. Or you can try Portman Hotel, but they;re even more expensive.

Portman is good for cuts (try Dennis)... but he is expensive. Have stopped going to him for color because it was just way off.

Just tried Tony&Guy the other day... quite pleased. Jason cut my hair and Gigi colored it. Cost was unbelivably reasonable! Think the cut was RMB180 and a half head foil was RMB600.

OUCH! 180-300 for a haircut! Guess it's just one of the many "prices" I'll have to pay for being a foreigner. lol. Thanks a bunch, will look into Toni and Guy this weekend.

I've gone to Joe Leong at Toni and Guy's and he gives a great haircut. But he is even more pricier than what's already been posted. Joe charges 500 RMB per cut. Also if you have GiGi do your color, they put you into another seat for the dry and style, which costs extra. I don't like when they do that. Especially if I'm just going home for the night and not going out. Like let me have the hairdryer and I'll dry it myself. For their prices, the blow dry should be included.

Figured for most other deals we get in Shanghai, I am not going to think twice about paying a lot more than home for my haircut. Nothing worse than a bad cut. You are stucking dealing with it every morning until it grows out. Not worth it!!

to funny reading about someone paying 500 rmb for hair cut and more for hair color and blow dry. Are you forgetting you are in Shanghai CHINA and YOU do not have to pay that much. If you feel like paying that, go to one with a red light and you will also get the full service for the 500rmb.

Since your spending the money, you should get something else out of it also. Have fun Laughing

I was going to post the same question about finding somewhere that will provide a quality cut and colour at a reasonable price. After reading about 4 threads it seems that there is either Tony and Guy (or more expensive) or those paying 10RMB for a butcher job. Maybe Flowers4YOU could suggest somewhere without the happy ending and just a decent haircut and colour?

paying 8 RMB for shaving my ugly head every 8-10 days and giving 2 RMB tip.

boughed a 250 rmb Philips shaver from Singapore and do myself...expensive but no need to suffer fro 30 minute rubbing and 5 minute cut on a 15 kuai outlet Smile

My dear is going to have the hair done... though last time it was like 6 months ago... can let her go with that 800 kuai

Quantity verses Quality. Hair is actually considered part of your skin.
Have you ever experienced a GOD AWFUL haircut or a do or perm or coloring?
For men maybe it's not so important and not as difficult to attain the desirable effect...although balding men I know will beg to differ.
Once you've lost your hair, or destroyed it, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing u can do about it except pout, regret and rethink why oh why it happened to me. How could I let this happen? It will grow out. But it takes a LONG time... years sometimes.
Therefore, I would rather pay 500rmb to get it done by someone I TRUST. The point is to walk out of the salon in better shape, less money in pocket, but with a satisfied smile and a radiant hair cut/do I will enjoy every morning and evening I go out until the next required visit.

There is a place called "Ihawon" right next to Parkson's on Shanxi Nan Lu station. They speak English, Chinese and Korean. Works for me. Pricey though.

for 500rmb, it may just be better to find a translator, (aka chinese friend who you can pay for their cut) and find a more local place to get it done. of course not being a gal, I guess i dont; understand some of teh intricacies of women's hair needs so maybe its not so good an idea?

He he...When my mother came to visit I took her to a local hairdresser, she paid 10 RMB, and said it was the best hair cut she had ever gotten Smile

In Pudong, there is Salon Esprit at Superbrand Mall where some hairdressers speak english. (You'll have to ask for one when ringing up - the receptionist speaks english) I paid 150 for a wash, cut & blowdry. It was 1/2 the usual price, they did a great job.

Mike at Tiffany Hair and make on Madang Lu above Ferrari store, not too sure on prices but does my wifes hair and she highly recomends him. So i tried and best cut i had for a while too only make sure the girl at reception who speaks english is there before as she is the only one to translate for you.

Anybody know exactly where ["Ihawon" right next to Parkson's on Shanxi Nan Lu station] is. I know the directions are already quite detailed, but I can't seem to find after trying. Related note, anybody know of any good Korean hair salons?

I actually went today to BIS salon in Times Square, Pudong and got an excellent cut and and highlights for only 580 (180 cut/ 400 highlight). I have long blond hair so I was really nervous. I didn't want to fork over the 1200 that Eric's quoted me so I bit the bullet on this one and came out smiling. Though, Angel, my hairdresser did not speak very much English she had no problems copying a picture and understanding my charades. No hacking or frying of my hair Smile

Sandy does a nice job on my husband's hair. She used to work at the Portman Ritz-Carlton, so she's used to cutting foreigners' hair. She's moved to a new salon now, so I'm pretty sure her prices are lower now too (under 200 RMB for a man's cut, I believe, but am not sure). She's at EFI Beauty Salon For Hair, 129 Tai An Rd. Can't believe getting a haircut is a hard ordeal, almost like trying to order a 6 course meal from menu you can't read. When I was in Shanghai and needed a "trim" my mother found a barber shop off Lancun Road in Pudong, $50 RMB got me the most ghetto haircut, I have short hair, 2'' longer then a [crew cut], and the guy hacked away at my sides almost being bald on the sides, and the top he never touched, call my Friar Steve from Ministry.

I'm assuming being Shanghai dressers don't goto school or require a license to cut. Sad

A nice tip I figured out, but requires you to get the cut done right first:
Bring a digital camera (or get prints) when you know for sure the cut is done 101% perfectly, take some pics from different angles, and show the damn butcher how it should be like. Sounds stupid but hell some people just need that [good if not mediocre cut and not look like a mushroom for 1month] cut.

500 rmb for haircut ! you ask people cut it and they charge from you , to me seems a big loss. well, i go to haircut with my bf, we only pay 5 or 10 rmb. if you pay me 200 rmb as translator, i will go with you next time. cell: 13816659189
