| Post subject: Where to find "Nasi Padang"? |
Anyone has any idea where can one find a Padang restaurant in Shanghai/Guangzhou/Beijing?
I'm craving for curry chicken and beef rendang and etc etc... I mean the singaporean style curry and rendang taste different with padang style, padang style tastes stronger, etc. |

An unsual place you'll find quite a good selection of SEA foods is "Coffee Club". It is on the ground floor of Sommerset Service Apartments on Tai Chang Lu, next to La Seine. |

Since I actually know the chefs of those two restaurants, I can confirm they cannot cook Nasi Padang. They are more towards fusion with singaporean style plus the chef for Lagun Sari is from West Java while Padang style came from Sumatra.
EMW soya and coffee club, I doubt they have what I'm looking for but it's worth a try. Thanks.
bellabella, if you just missed rendang, regular beef rendang - crossroads chains have it, lagun sari, bali laguna also have it. lagun sari is a bit dry, typical Java/Malay style while bali laguna and crossroads are singapore style.
If you missed regular ayam goreng - actually many chinese restaurants have it such as grape restaurant on xin le lu (?). If you missed indonesian style ayam goreng kuning (which is not in Padang menu), then you can go to Queen's Cafe nearby the bund - but they sold the restaurant to local owner and I'm not sure if they still serve it. Neverthless it wasn't that great because they are using Indofood instant spice and broiler chicken. Not sure if Lagun Sari still has it since one of their chefs just resigned.
Ok... I know I'm damn picky about what I eat... I was born with this bad habit. |

Or the Spice Market at Taicang Lu, near Xin Tian Di?
Hey guys, I'd think you're all err... Singaporeans/Malaysians? I could definintely use a good chunk of rendang right now! How about we all go check it out together? This weekend or something?

Sorry to say this, but Banana Leaf "Curry" House is to be avoided at all costs. . .
The first time I went (to the Plaza 66 branch) it was far from good but kind of OK. Not actually offensive. The Tiger girl was also cute enough to lift the overall experience by about half a notch. I told myself I'd probably go back sometime but never actually did.
Second time (at the Raffles City branch) I got dragged in by this Shanghaiese girl and it was just indescribably awful. Truly horrible. The green curry was hidden under about an inch of axel grease, the chicken korma was a 'made-from-pre-mix-milk-and-chicken-strew-with-chili-oil-drizzled-on-t op' type of thing. Creative to be sure, but neither tasty nor authentic.
And we waited ages for rice.
To be fair a vietnamese sausage thing was perfectly edible, even tasty. The teh tarik was also acceptable.
But no way I would go back. . . except possibly for a teh tarik (but Crossroads is probably better for that). |

Well n00b, in here or Beijing you will never find Padang food restaurant as yet. not like in HK, they did have it or Singapore but still if you picky for food, why don't you just go to Indonesia and have your craving there, sure you're not picky anymore as outside Indonesia, none will exactly the same taste as we must adjusting with all the ingridient we find in here, same situation for malay, singapore, vietnamese food, not the same taste as its in their country but good luck for finding it and let us know, ok. |

I have actually had rendang here in shanghai, in an Indonesian restaurant that used to be on the Hong Mei lu pedestrian street - long gone now. But it just didn't match up to the tough buffolo meat rendang I loved in Sumatra! As for ayam goreng I loved the stuff I had in sumatra with this crunchy coconut husk coating - haven't seen it anywhere else. I guess it would be impossible to find a real Padang style restaurant - it would be too rustic for a shanghai foreign restaurant. I guess I will just have to go back to Indonesia! |

i am travelling around sing, kl, jkt quite often but i kinda need to find out if they also have it here in this land.
satay house was sold and now they have that moon river diner on hong mei pedestrian street...
i'm quite sure banana leaf is a thai restaurant - so it's reasonable for me that they don't have singaporean or malaysian taste. only been there once though. |

banana leaf is a thai restaurant but i find the tastes have been finetuned to suit the local Chinese or perhaps the day that i was there i ordered the wrong dishes..i dunno...
the last time i had good rendang was at Malaya. The cook from Malaya is now working at Crossroads in Hongqiao. Will try the rendang on my next visit there.

the banana leaf restaurant is atrocious and an absolute disgrace to SE Asia. Please do not think that Singaporean/Malaysian food tastes like that. It is a mystery to me how this place actually survives.
I don't remember banana leaf being a Thai restaurant. Irene's Thai is more like a real Thai place to me.
I've been to Bali Laguna. It is decent for such SE Asian dishes.
I am feeling very hungry reading this thread, and would kill for nai padang now! |
