| Post subject: New hard drive - RAID array |
Need a new hard drive and was wondering if its worth the time and effort to get two and set RAID up.
does it really double the read/write time or should i not bother
cheers |

If you do a hardware RAID (with a card hooked up to multiple drives), you should notice no difference.
If you do a software RAID (where the os manages it) it's *possible* you will see a slight performance decrease. but i don't think it will be that bad if your computer is fairly fast.
you got lots of sensitive data? |

no, LOL.
i was under the impression you could set it up so that you either had the option of the 2nd drive as a back up or running both drives as one drive with the cpu reading/writing alternatively to each drive, effectively doubling the hard drive access speed. |

Ah... now i understand you. and now i realize that i'm in over my head... I haven't really done anything like that before...
But the overhead involved i think would prevent *doubling* the access speed.
I'd say the decrease in HD access time probably isn't worth it. but that's just a guess. |

It won't. If you have the budget, add memory instead. That'd make your pc run faster. This includes your video card memory, put it into the max and your pc speed will improve significantly.
Question is, how fast you want it to be? What do you use the pc for? Maxing the memory might be an overkill solution as well. |

Ways to increase speed:
1. Increase RAM
2. Get a faster Graphics Card with good memory
3. Get a faster Motherboard (all MB's are not equal)
4. Get a faster HDD
5. Get a faster
RAID ain't gonna make much, if any, difference. |

cheers for info.
PC is fast enough. i have decent motherboard, cpu and graphics card and just wondered if it was worth my while doing RAID as i need a new hard drive anyway, obviously not.
One new hard drive it is then. |
