Post subject: Shipping to Shanghai (from US)?

Hi. My husband and I are moving to Shanghai in either August or September from New York City. What is the best way or carrier to ship our belongings from the US? Personal anecdotes greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Beakster

You can ship by container. I believe there is a company called COSCO has direct line from New York to Shanghai. You should be able to find their phone # in your Yellow Page. I checked the price a year ago before I moved to Shanghai; it's about $ 1200 to $ 1800 or less depending on the size of the container.

But in the end, we didn't ship anything over. In general you could find most of the things in Shanghai. The furniture here is good and not expensive, so there is no reason to ship over the furniture. For TV and the sound systems, it's likely that you won't be able to use them here anyway. If your size is big, then bring over clothes and shoes. What else? Oh ... I found the kitchen utensils are better in US and in Canada. Also things made in China are not as good quality here as the ones available in North America.

It's only my observation. Any other opinion out of there?

By the way, I'm glad that we've brought over our computer to Shanghai. It seems much more expesive here, especially those large screen LCD monitor (19" and over).

A lot of shipping companies charge by the CBM (Cubic Meter) I will be having many of my things shipped, but I wont have to deal with it because my parents are in the import/export business and nothing could be simpler for them but to arrange for a few things to be slipped into a spare container headed for Shanghai, on the cheap. >.<

whats the issue with shipping to shanghai/china from anywhere... well firstly the big question should be ..do i need to? and basically apart from somethings that are really personal or you can't be without, sure... go for it.. all the major shipping companies service china.. but in reality as for bringing everything here, why? all you could want you can get here... or pretty damn near all... albiet there are issues over qulaity and to some extent pricing, but you know that will change here fairly quickly... what you have heard about china about change and growth is having a big impact & its happening rapidly...
also how long you intend to stay... come first decide later... after all you might come and find that after 1-2yrs you gotta move on for one reason or another...
i know a very senior CEO... been in 2 other aisan countries for 14yrs+ thought coming and workign here in his profession and at his level would be a doodle... it wasn't... at the end of his 2yr contract he didnt renew it... instead he headed off to another asian country he'd worked in before... he also had contemplated bring all from the usa... in hindsight -he and his family were glad they didn't!

If you can make the move within $4,000 USD, Please do it. I already spend more than that to built a new home(not including furniture, TVs, fridge, microwv, dvd, washing machine, dryer, A/Cs)
