Post subject: Representative Office in an apartment?

My business partner and I have small American based company. He's based in the US and I've been living in China for 5 months in a hotel and plan on getting an apt in Shanghai to stay for another year or longer. I'm pretty sure I can get away living/working in my apartment on an F visa without registering it as a Representive Office (RO) but now I want to hire a Chinese person to help find new suppliers in China. I act as a liason to coordinate my companies activities and generate no revenue or invoices in China.

My question is this: If I hire a Chinese person, do I have to register a RO in order to deal with their taxes, etc? And if so, can I register the office in my apartment since I'm not interested in leasing office space? What type of apartment should I be looking for? I prefer renting from landlords directly (i.e. I'm not interested in paying $2,000/mo. for a serviced building when I can get a better deal on my own).

Anyone got advice on this? Please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Any consulting agency that sets up your RO can also supply you with an "office" that can be used as the registered address for 12,000 RMB per year or similiar. You can use pretty much anywhere for other operations, although you should use a mixed use building if you will be publishing the address and living there.

You can probably get by hiring through FESCO or the like directy from your headquarters office.
