| Post subject: Baggage |
I'm flying to the US in June, and I'm a little worried about how many suitcases I can take, plus the weight limitations. A friend of mine paid a $650 overweight fee going to Germany, and I don't want to get a surprise like that at the airport.
My airline's shanghai office says two checked bags, 70 pounds each, plus a 50 pound carry on. But someone else told me she thought the weight penalties were assessed by the government, not the airlines. Can someone clarify this for me? thanks. |

Hey mswp! The weight limits are usually set by the airlines [or more correctly, by the carrying capacity of the plane]. Obviously, there has to be some sort of limit. Even the space shuttle has cargo weight limitations.
Your airline ticket should clearly show the weights allowed. Different airlines have different weights. [I suppose it depends on the aircraft being used]. I have flown with a 20kg [45lbs] limit before while others allowed 30kg [70lbs]. I know which one I'll be picking in future. |

The 70 KG limit i the limit on one bag and some airlines have less. You would probably get dinged for overweight if you had 2 70kg bags. |

Sounds like you are flying United and if that is the case, then the 70 pound weight limit is correct. If you have any connecting flights within the US, the limit will still be 70 pounds since you are en route from an international destination. However, should your travel within the US include any flights that are not part of your international itenerary, please note that several airlines within the US (including United) impose a 50 pound weight limitation for domestic travel.
I usually pay USD$130 or so per additional bag. The excess weight fees are quite high (possibly beginning around USD75) so if you think you may be overweight, it may be worth it to bring another bag.
Please note that the airline through which you booked also has luggage coding on the ticket. Last year, I had to fly Air Cananda to the US but was able to bring the United luggage limitations because I had booked through United.
The 50 pound carry on sounds a bit high to me. I believe that the limitation is far less than that. However, I have never been stopped in Shanghai for carry on luggage so you should be just fine. Just be sure that the dimensions of your bag aren't too large.
Have a nice trip! |
