| Post subject: Buying a notebook |
Hi all,
I'm trying to decide wether I should buy a laptop in Canada or when I arrive in Shanghai. Can anyone give me an idea (or website) of the cost of computers in SH? Can anyone recommend a store that I should visit? Also, I've heard that if I was to bring a laptop into China I would have to pay a duty on it... is that true?
Thanks in advance |

Local branded laptops are cheap, but the quality is questionable and there may be a big problem if you have problems with drivers or need support. Foreign branded laptops that are manufactured in China are more trustworthy, but the price will be similar to Europe. Some people say they are manufactured to a lower spec than models made for foreign consumption. I'm not sure that Dell or HP would allow poorly manufactured goods to be sold under their brand unless they were fake or had been rebadged under a local brand. I use a locally sourced Dell at work. It's very basic. The build quality is OK, nothing special. You can get Acers, Toshibas, Macs, IBM and HP easily in SH. A lot of people say the best place to go is Hong Kong, but I prefer to source things locally so I can sort out any problems directly if they arise.
I've just placed an order for a Dell desktop for perosnal use. It's a powerful spec machine to cope with video and graphics editing. It has 1gb of RAM, a tft and a DVD burner and comes in at $1000 (US). Laptops will be more expensive than that and offer a lower spec. I thought about laptops and even an mini mac in terms of portability, but you get better value for money and longer user life out of a desktop. I bought a Dell 6 years ago in the UK that my mother now uses and it's still going strong. My old company used to use Dells in dusty warehouses for years and years so I trust them and think they offer good value for money. |

The laptops in Shanghai (Taipingyang digital store) start at around 1000 U$D (8000RMB). The ones that Matty is talking about start at arround 11.000RMB up till 19.000RMB |
