Dear Expat Cat,
I understand that China is very famous for selling dogmeat. Personally, I have a distaste for dogmeat as dogs are generally filthy creatures and do not like to bath. Besides dogs eat and drink everything to the extent that they would drink toilet water if they are thirsty enough.
You can see now why I would rather prefer succulent catmeat. Besides taking regular baths, cats are also renowned for being rather picky about their food and drink. Thus the average quality of catmeat would be higher than the average quality of dogmeat don't you think?
Are there any famous restaurants in Shanghai which sell delicious succulent cooked cats? Much appreciations for any recommendations of yours.

I dont know what cats are you reffering to but mine sh!ts in the sink!
Fine they lick themselves everyday, but dogs clean themselves also, even though they do stink like a old garage.
Cats also drink from toilets, eat rats/mice and birds.
Pigs live in **** and still we dont have a problem eating them.

I am at a loss whether eating dogs or cats is the lesser evil for a westerner.
Considered on health grounds, dogs are the cleaner species. True, they don't bathe, but they have a disinfectant in their saliva. If you are injured and your dog licks your wound, this could presumably help it heal. Unless the dog has been eating something really nasty right before that 
On the other hand, cats eat mice and rats which carry diseases.
As for Chinese eating habits, if you mention eating cats to people in North and Central China, they will show disgust. I don't know whether they really feel like that or just feel obliged to feign it. However, if you mention eating dogs, people will smack their lips without bothering what you think.
I have seen dog meat dishes in many restaurants across China, at a price usually three times higher than the corresponding pork dish. Restaurant owners claim the dogs are specially bred, which is usually true, but I am sure they would not hesitate to buy a slain stray dog on the market. They might be thinking of stray dogs as "free-ranging game"

Urban inspection authorities are trying to shut down an underground coop in Nanxiang Town that they believe is being used to house live cats captured in the city and nearby provinces and sold to restaurants in southern China.
Authorities suspect tens of thousands of cats have been housed in the coop and eventually sent to restaurants in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, since March.
The coop sits next to a recycling station on Zhongren Road in Nanxiang. The cats are held in small wooden cages, and are shipped away by the hundreds in vans, authorities said.
Officials said the coop's owner hired workers to watch over the cats day and night as well as to transport them to Guangzhou.
He also had a team of helpers that captured cats or bought them from similar underground spots, mainly in Jiangsu Province.
The urban inspection team has ordered the owner to shut down the coop, but a lack of regulations makes it difficult to charge him with any crime.
To date, officials have only been allowed to fine the owner for not having quarantine certificates for transporting animals.
There are no laws in China banning capturing or selling cats.
Authorities said the cats were sold for 10 yuan (US$1.20) each and used as a major ingredient in a famous Guangdong dish called longhufeng, which means dragon, tiger and phoenix.
Previously, civet cats were used to represent the tiger in the dish, but after civets were related to the SARS outbreak they were replaced with regular cats. Snakes are used instead of dragons in the dish, and chickens replace the phoenix. |

FYI
I know that a lot of people like to eat a Di Shui Dong's. I am a regular there myself since the food is good and they have an English menu. I was just recently informed that the Chinese menu has an item that the English menu does not. And what is this item pray tell................................................ DOG! |

Well, at the insistence of a local friend of mine, I've tried the dog dish at a restaurant in Pu Dong. It wasn't bad, I only tried a single morsel... similar to roast beef really with a little more gamey after taste.
Speaking of strange foods, I've tried a few of them so far (yes, I have a very adventurous pallate and cast iron stomach):
- Drunken Shrimp (live shrimp dumped into a bowl of wine and spices... let them get "drunk" and then bite their tails off). Actually quite tasty.
- Drunken Crab (dead, but raw crab marined in wine... slurp the insides out...) Just so-so.
- Snake hot-pot (whole snake, it was some blue colored one) in traditional hot-pot... good, but expensive for hot pot).
- Duck Feet (similar to chicken feet, but more tender and often sans bones)...
- Duck Chins/Tongues (When deep friend, makes a delcious snack...
- Fish Head (Slurp the meat off the large fish head bones, I don't eat the eye though! Actually quite tasty, less fishy taste, and less chance of a small bone getting stuck in your throat).
Some things I've heard about, but am NOT willing to try (yet...):
- Cow dick (apparently, my friend claims it keeps a man's skin and face looking very young...)
- Donkey Meat (featuring a special dish called the "the three jewels"... use your imagination).
- Pig Brain (and a myriad of other organ meats available often at hot pot)
Oh, and as a finisher, I've heard some jokes about people from GuangZhou (who are legendary for their dietary indescretion):
1. If a new animal is discovered by science, they say that the Americans want to keep it alive to study its behavior, the Japanese want to dissect it to see how it works, and the people from GuangZhou just want to know "does it taste good?".
2. People from GuangZhou eat everything that flies except the airplanes, and everything with legs except the table...

I can't forget the photo a friend took at a marketplace in Guangzhou, five years ago. There were maybe a thousand dried rats stacked up against a wall. The rats were dried flat and didn't seem to have much meat left under the fur. I still shudder at the thought these rats may have been sold as food. |

if you really want to eat cat meat this is what you mean right?
well as someone already answer your question just go back to your country and go to any chinese restaurant there and ask for rabbit meat hahahahah most of chinese restaurant is western countries sale cat meat for rabbit the only way to distinguish them is by looking at the back baone( the one on the back leg one is flat the other one is round) but you got to be a chef to know that anyway i do not eat cat as far as i know anyway but i heard it taste excatly the same
just my little knowledge about it
if someone here answer after me and say i am stupid and it is not true wel too bad because this is the way it is sorry |

Myself, I'd rather not eat this kind of cat, but have no qualms of about the other kind... |

once i have eaten that LongHuFeng Soup while in NanHai district, Foshan nearby city to Guangzhou. Unfortuantely at that time my Chinese level was poor and only after tasting the white meat , i have learnt that it was cat meat. If I didnt ask what kind of meat was that , i would have bet that it was chicken meat!
There was no bad health effects that night though the neighbours heard me scream 'meow meow' during my sleep! hehe |

There's plenty of cat meat here in Shanghai. Just go to one of these roadside guys that sell 'lamb skewers'. Chances are high you will eat cat meat, which has been treated with lamb fat to give it the characteristic 'taste'. There was an article in Shanghai daily about this practise not so long ago. |

Actually I would not be surprised. There were times when rat was eaten in some parts of Europe as well. |

Yep, that was also what I heard. Those lamb skewers or lamb kebab mainly exist of rat meat. |

They are still eaten in some places...mainly chinese restaurants! 
(not kidding: there was an incident a few weeks ago back home involving rats in a chinese restaurant) |
