We have had this same topic in various forms a few times... expect to hear a lot of people gripe about the need to impress a first date at an upscale restaurant...

Let's see... what are you looking for? Something that has excellent food, a large menu, great decor? Something trendy, classic, with a view? Something pricey or something not as expensive?

Or are you looking for activities other than dining?

If restaurants, my recommendations would probably be the following (based on many different factors):

Sens & Bund
T-8
Bali Laguna
Simply Thai (Dong Ping Road location)
Ambrosia
Nepali Kitchen
Lapis Lazuli
M on the Bund (I don't care if the food isn't great, if you sit outside on a glorious night, it is great)
Mesa
Azul
Jean Georges
KABB
South Beauty
1221
Le Garcon Chinois
Va Bene
Temple Saigon

Loads and loads of interesting and delicious places to go... kind of depends on what kind of impression you want to make! I know I have omitted a few... but talking about food is making me hungry!

Youre insane if you want to take her to a place like Sens & Bund for a first date for many reason. Being surrounded by a bunch of stuffy suits, most of which are on business, is not the type of place to get to know each other.

Just do a small, decent bistro type place. Good food, casual, relatively quiet, romantic and simple.
Keep it as real and as unnerving as possible.
Le Bouchon gets my vote. When you make a res, tell the person taking the details you need a quiet deuce somewhere as this is a first date.

Tell us about the person you will take out. What does that person like?

Also, when you say "impressing date," do you mean you want to have another chance to date this person? And/or do you just want to fuq this person on the first date, and forget about anything/everything else afterwards?

In which case I might recommend Sens & Bund.
Youd have a decent shot at playing the reciprocity angle.

Afraid I'm rather daft when it comes to understanding these new terms you kids use to describe your romances, but does that mean doing the 69?

knowing shanghainese girls; she'll probably just think this guys a cheap ass. im guessing because he wants to be impressive, being creative and spontaneous is not what he wants. mate, if u wanna 'impress' her with the date, by all means spend spend and spend........if the aim is to impress. only ur wallets limits what u can do there.

the only thing you should be worried about is if she is going to be impressed by YOU. or does that not stand in shanghai

Yes, they give you instruction, wetsuit and option to video it as well, did it once and is great Mr. Green and its about 600rmb for 30 minutes.

Paramount in jing an is a couzy place where you can dance ballroom and latin in a Gala setting. Or the art museum with the nice Kathleen's coffeebar above isn't what you call cheap.

Thats indeed to impress and show your know some thing more then a lame trip to the cinema. Why do that, look at the screen for two hours and not much interaction between you two and if there were why wast your money on the cinema ticket and not go watch a dvd at home?

Not sure yet what you mean by "impressing date" and no idea as to the character of the girl you're dating, but perhaps consider taking her to one of the smaller restaurants on Huang He Lu, and try to arrange one of the private rooms.

First, get your transport sorted out (get a car with driver). This is particularly important especially when you're unlucky enough to have rain pouring down on the day. You don't go on an impressive date to an impressive place and having to fight for a taxi or go on the tube or bus.

If you go get your transport sorted out, go to Gongqing Park for a picnic, have a walk, ride a bike, etc., then go to a nice restaurant to watch the sunset, have a few drinks and then dinner.

BTW, an impressive first date will leave you a question as to where to go on the second date!! I'll suggest you just be yourself and just go to a fun place instead of an impressive place for your first date.
