759 TRILLION TO ONE
Jun 2 2005
The amazing odds against couple's four lottery wins on SAME day
By Craig Mcdonald
LOTTO millionaires Michelle Turnbull and David Lindsay beat combined odds of 759 TRILLION to one to scoop four wins in one weekend.
The shellshocked couple netted £450 on a HotPicks entry, prizes of £80 and a tenner on the main draw, and then a £4,535,773 jackpot.
The odds on getting three numbers are one in 57, and matching four is a one in 1033 chance.
A HotPicks top prize is a one-in922 shot, and the odds of a main draw jackpot are 13,983,816-1.
Put all those odds together and you get a combined total of 759trillion, 157billion, 346million, 444,112-1.
Michelle's parents, Charles and Jean, also won £80 on Saturday by matching four numbers. And the run of luck continued on Tuesday when David won £100on the horses.
As the couple toasted their amazing good fortune with champagne, catering assistant Michelle, 32, said: 'This won't change us as people, but it will better our lives and the lives of our families David, a 39-year-old labourer, added: 'The jackpot sent me into orbit. I was officially retired the moment the sixth ball dropped!'
The couple's winning spree began when David checked his numbers at their home in Dumfries on Saturday night.
The dad had won £10 on a Lucky Dip. And another entry, with four of the numbers based on family birthdays, netted him £80.
David chose 10 (Michelle's dad's birthday), 16 (her son's birthday), 21 (her mum's birthday), and 24 (Michelle's birthday) as well as two random numbers.
All his birthday numbers came up, giving him four numbers. And he also used 10, 16 and 21 to win £450 on the three-number HotPicks game.
While David was going with birthdays, Michelle was buying a £1 Lucky Dip ticket at her local Spar in Whitesands, Dumfries.
But by an amazing coincidence, her entry contained all four of Dave's birthday numbers.
And along with 34 and 46, they gave her a half-share of Saturday's £9,071,546 rollover jackpot. The other winner's name was not revealed.
Michelle said: 'David was really excited to have won £500 and it took me half an hour to check my numbers.
'At first I thought I had about three. My reaction was, 'At least we've got a tenner.' 'But I kept on checking them and checking them again, and I realised I had them all.'
Catering assistant Michelle has yet to decide whether to quit her job at Dumfries Royal Infirmary.
But David is looking forward to a life of leisure, with more time to follow his beloved Celtic. He said: 'I'd just seen us lift the Scottish Cup when I checked my numbers, so it was already a good night.'
David and Michelle plan to buy a luxury home, take a holiday and splash out on a top of the range BMW.
There will be plenty of treats for Michelle's son John-Paul, 11, and David's daughter Sara, 18.
And the big-hearted couple plan to donate to the newly launched Scots appeal to help the poor in the African state of Malawi.
Michelle said: 'We are in a position now where we can help.
'We will be putting money into the Malawi appeal as soon as we can.'
Michelle gave the jackpot ticket to her dad for safe keeping while she checked out the win - Scotland's biggest this year - with Camelot.
But it took until Tuesday lunchtime for the family's good fortune to be confirmed because the Lotto firm's offices were closed on Monday for the bank holiday.
While they waited, Michelle and David took a trip to get away from it all.
Michelle, originally from Aldershot in Hampshire, said: 'Waiting was almost torture. We were thinking, 'What if there is some mistake? What if we have one of the numbers wrong?' 'We just checked the ticket over and over again.Thankfully, it checked out

Then they get run over by a bus on the way to the presentation.
Joke, British humour.
Good luck to them. |

I used to have a problem with the one arm bandits (believe that) when I was about 18-19 years old.
Would go into a pub buy a pint and by the time i finished the pint I'd lost all my money.
Glad in many ways, because I have never gambled since, apart from private bets (really small bets), which I don't think really counts. |
